17 HMR Accuracy

I know some of you have worked with the 17 HMR and have right answer, so here goes.
I have an H&R/NEF 17 HMR and I am getting around 2" 5 shot groups at 50 yards. My Taurus Tracker can almost do this good.
I "brush" the barrel and then run a boresnake through it before I shoot the next 5 shot group. The first shot is about 1/4 to the left of the 1" dot and the next shot is about 1" high and 1" to the right and the rest of the shots are about as high and from 1" left to the center of the dot.
Is this typical? I think I am going to sell it at the next gun show and buy a different make and model. Any suggestions? Ruger, Savage, Marlin...
I have seen the posts asking this before and searched for them but did not find the information I wanted.
Please give me your input.

    Using 4 different kinds of 17 HMR ammo, all 17 grain loads,Remington, CCI, Federal and Hornady, I cannot get a decent grouping at 100 yards from my Savage model 93R. The best is a 3.5 inch spread and the worst is 5 inch spread. I shot three shot groups of each kind of ammo for this test. I then thoroughly cleaned the bore and shot a seven shot group with Hornady 17 grain Vmax ammo and the group measured 3.65" at its widest shot. I'm frust rated. Yesterday I shot my Savage 243 and got a .375" group at 100 yards using hand loads......any thoughts?

    Hate to say it, but if you're doing your best; it might be the gun.
    What were the wind conditions?
    Do you have access to an indoor range?

    Look at the muzzle at the crown of the rifling; see any burrs, off-center bore, dings or a pile of lead dust on one side?
    Unload the gun. Again.
    Shake the rifle with one hand, holding it by the barrel. Hear anything other than the bolt?
    Now try it whilst grasping by the forend. Anything?

    Pinch the barrel and forend with thumb & finger to see if either flexes.

    Try these suggestions and report back; triage is the most important part of treatment.

    gunnut 505 is right, it might be the gun. but if there was any wind that would be the problem. 17 hmr's are so light that a sneeze will blow them of course!

    deerhunting.jpg it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

    well i didn't jump on the .17 hmr until recently..i have lots of varmit rifles so i didn't see any need..(.220 swift,.222,.223,6mm,.243,22-250) and lots of 22 mags...well i bought the ruger heavy barrel laminated .17...my ruger is a tack driver..at 150 yards this is well below 1"..there is also a 20 grain bullet out there now that helps with the wind a little.. i have already taken two chucks this year...not as explosive as the .220 swift but a joy to shoot..my friend has the savage and is getting the same results for half the price i paid..but i like the rugers...

    I have the Marlin Mod.17v with a POS Simmons 3x9x50 scope and I'm getting a groupe of 1" or less @ 100yds. The only drawback is the price of ammo.

    As 505 said-
    I have a Sav. 93 and it shoots 1" or less @100 with out trying hard. Hornady ammo works best in mine.

    Don't forget the scope and mounts - I have a Savage 93 too and it shoots under a half inch at 100 yds every time! but wind does cause horazontal spread. Good luck. Probably not the gun -- Trigger is a challenge, how is your trigger control?

    Change that thing! get a rifle basix trigger! worth every penny and easy to put in.

    I also have the Savage 93. Bought it used so I don't have alot in it. It will also group an inch and sometimes better. The rifle is far better at shooting straight than I am. Wind does have a big factor on those little bullets. But my rifle does not shoot the CCI TNT's as good as the Hornady's. Have not tried the V-Shoks yet. Good luck.

    I would'nt mess with the trigger yet. It sounds to me like you have another serious problem elsewhere that needs to be fixed first.
    There is no reason aside from 40mph winds, that your rifle should be getting larger than 1.5" groups even with a not so good shooter at the trigger.

    First I would check the scope and mount, if that checks out, remove the bolt swab the barrel and check the bore by light to see if you can find any imperfections.
    Don't change anything on the rifle until you make sure there is no factory defect!!! or you could void the warranty.
