Winchester 32-40

I have just picked up a winchester model 94 in 32-40, The gun was built in 1904 and has a half round half octagon barrel with a button magazine. It also has a marbles tang sight and a shotgun style butt plate made 0f bakalite I think, the gun looks to be all original with about 80% blueing and no bad scratches or dings, I was looking for some sort of price that this is worth and some info on the butt, I have never seen this type before.

    My father recently gave me a 32-40 Winchester model 94 (I think, the only date on it is where it says "patented 1894"). He knew very little aboput the firearm and only told me it belonged to my grandfather. I will attempt to describe it to you but forgive me for I will try to describe those features on the firearm in simple terms

    It has an octogon barrel with a round magazine tube. The wood is dark in color and it has a tang sight. The trigger is a two trigger system one acting as a safety I believe. the butt plate is curved to fit in you shoulder with a metal plate over top. The serial number is printer on the underside of the receiver and it is 6 digits long.

    I know it will be hard to tell me the value of the firearm without seeing pics or further detail but could you give me a rough estimate.

    Hi, you have a Winchester Model 1894 rifle. The serial number puts it the yom about 1907. The double trigger is actually a double set trigger. You push the rear trigger foreward until it clicks then front trigger will have a light pull. In average shooting condition (no rust or pitting and no broken stocks) it would sell in my area (Houston,TX) for about $800. If it is a takedown model you can add a few hundred. A factory letter confirming the special order set triggers would also add to the value.

    Thanks for the info. Unfortunately it has some pitting on the barrell. Where might I get a factory letter from?

    The Winchester Museum in Cody, Wyoming. You can probably order one over the internet. I think they have a web site. Make sure they have the records for your serial number before you order. They are missing several years of records because of a fire. Yours may fall in missing years.

    Unfortunately, the serial number range for your Model 1894 is too high to letter it through the Cody Firearms Museum (they only have the records for serial numbers 1 - 353,999). The DOM (date of manufacture) is most likely in the 1908/1909 time frame.

    What you have is actually a Model 1894 Plain Sporting Rifle, and the value is most likely at least $1000 (not including the tang sight). The set trigger is a valuable special order option, and the cartridge chambering is the rarest of the various calibers offered in the Model 1894. If you can take some digital pictures and send them to me at Win1885@msn.com, and I can give you a much better value estimate.
