oval primers ????????
I just read on a different forum someone refer to oval primers supposedly common in the 50's. Anyone know about this?

Way back when, I bought a bunch of RWS primers imported from Germany.
The face of the primer where the firing pin impacts was slightly radiused, i.e. not flat like currently available primers.
I believe that is what was referenced in the other forum. They weren't referring to the circumference of the primer, but the radius on the face.

The earliest primers were domed, not flat faced as is the standard now. I'm not sure when the transition occurred, but these are normal on pre-1900 / early 20th Century loads. In fact, when one sees flat cup primers on older rounds it is almost certain the specimens are reloads.

When I started reloading in the 50's it was necessary to have two large primer seating punches and two small punches. One each for flat and one for rounded face primers. Also shotshell primers were made in two sizes. One size for Remington-Peters and one for W-W. Glad they made our lives simpler!

I have a few old boxes of Winchester SuperX 218 Bee cartridges with domed primers. I don't know how old they are but I fired a box last year and every one went bang. [:)] 0 -
I've got some factory .300 Weatherby Mag cartridges that have a domed primer in them, I always assumed it was something cool that Weatherby was doing? 0
