Colt Servive Model Ace, Military?
I've collected Colt aces and service model ace for a few years now and I've got one now that baffels me. It appears to be military,It is parkarized with the darker color around muzzle and slide stop,plastic grips and has the early pinned ejector, however its on a Remington Rand frame stamped U.S. property and all correct markings of acceptance for the frame, But there are no arsenal rework markings and just in front of the serial number it has been stamped SM inside a box. I was wondering if any one has any ideas or theories? Do you believe this pistol could be authentic??

My reference notes that only 1911A1's manufactured by Colt, ( special serial range ), are marked that way.
Given the above, It would be my 2 cents that their could be two plausible explanations.
1), Done at a arsenal, or by a knowledgeable unit armorer for issue to a pistol team, and/or for training.
2), Fake, assembled and marked by some shadetree gun butcher who figured he could made big bucks by creating a new/valuable variation that nobody ever heard of.

Back in the 1960's I bought 3 Service Ace conversion kits in military wrappings from a military surplus sale at Truax Field in Madison, WI. I am sure when armorers put them on a frame, they didnt care who made it, but I would guess that the addition to the serial # came compliments of a faker. 0
