Scope question
I just bought a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70...the sights are ok, but with my eye sight getting older I was wondering if a scope wouldn't be benificial...any thoughts and what type of scope..make model etc..

I'm planning on adding a scope to my PTR-91, better known as a H&K G3 clone. Does anybody have any experience with the ATN line of scopes? This one has all the goodies that I'm looking for. If you have another suggestion feel free to let me know. The price range of this one is appealing to me.

A scope could probably help ya and for a 45/70 I'm assuming you aren't shooting prairie dogs or across big canyons into the next county so I would recommend a low power variable or a fixed of 2 or 4 power tops. I've got a 1.5x5 Leupold on my 375 H&H and I really like it. Can't go wrong with a Leupold or Burris. 0 -

A ghost ring (large peep) might be more in line with the intended use for that type of gun. Ashley Outdoors make a neat set thats
hell-for-stout. Even aging eyes should be able to hit pretty well out to 100 yards or so with that type of set up, and its fast on target as well. Just my humble opinion...[;)]

I have a 1.5x Zeiss on a 458Win. It has a post reticle and for anything that I'd be shooting at with it, I find the lack of power to be an advantage. It does have the benefits of scope sights- ie single plane of focus & 360 degree visibility around the point of aim. 0 -
If the problem with the old eyes is the common one, that you have trouble focusing clearly on the front sight, than a scope is likely the way to go. Glasses can be made to bring the front sight into focus if your doctor is willing to work with you and the rifle, but for a scope I would suggest a low power (like 1x, 1.5x or 2x) is something really bullet proof (in .45-70, pun intended!) like Burris, Leupold, or Zeiss. 0 -

Thanks for the replys...I made up my mind and I am going with a Leupold set up...The ghost sights are real nice and a very good idea but with my eyes a scope is the answer. Its hell getting old...Thanks for the scope suggestions...getting the gun ready for this seasons elk in Chama New Mexico. Finally got the bucks together for one of those bull hunts amd wanted to get one with this big bore. 0 -
I've a 45-70 Siamese Mauser that I've got set up with a V3 Weaver. The 1-3x20 scope works well with this set up and cost 1/2 what the Leupold does. Not to slam Leupold, I own several and like them alot. 0 -
I put the 1.5x5 Leupold on my Guides Rifle with Warn Q-D rings and it is great. Same problem you have, old eyes!![^]

A real helper too with bad eyes, for a scope, is to go with a 30 mm instead of just a 1" diameter tube. It may be tougher to guage paralax but for hunting accuracy it works fine. I recommend the 1.5-6, or 2-7 range for that rifle.
