Winchester 1400....Any good???
How good of a hunting gun is this. My father is finally retiring his old Remington 11 after 40+ years of use and I was looking at buying one of these for him as a fathers day present from a local shop in 99% condition for 300. It is a 28inch barrel with win chokes. How do these guns fair compared to Brownings and Remingtons?

My son was given one to him from his Grandpa and has had no problems with it over the years. He doesn't use it too much for hunting any more because it only has a 2 3/4" chamber and he likes to use 3" for Waterfoul...

I would not reccomend buying this gun unless he is going to use it for bird hunting only. Here on the east coast we have to use buckshot for deer hunting in many areas. I had a Model 140 Ranger which is an identical copy of the 1400. As far as looks and function go, it is a very nice looking gun and I never had any issues with it cycling all kinds of ammo, it just did not pattern worth a dime. I had 5 different choke tubes for mine and I tried every type of buckshot available and it would not throw a decent pattern. However, it did shoot no. 8's pretty good. This was my first semi auto shotgun and I bought it in 1988 at Roses Dept. store for $239 NIB. It was one of the best looking guns I have ever owned, deep blue finish with dark walnut stock and forearm, but it just would not group buckshot at all.[V][V]

All he hunts is Pheasants so it should work well then right? 0 -
Yeah, I think it would make an excellent bird gun if he does not mind using 2 3/4" shells only. It actually was balanced well and had a good swing for bird shooting.

Generally it is not considered a very good design. I bought one new in 1968 when I was a poor high school kid. I traded it off after 3 months on a beat up Win. Model 12 which was 10 times the gun. Back then the 20 guage winchester 1400 was a 12 ga frame with a 20 guage barrel that had a plastic shim!! As you can imagine, that was not a good engineering plan. The model 1200 was a little better, although they still feel chintzy to me. 0 -
