Ruger 3- Screw
Are the old ruger single six 3-screw guns commanding a premium over the new guns. Is it irresponible to shoot these guns without having the factory recalled parts in. I like the sound of the 4 clicks.

Depends on condition. Most collectors want as new. Your Ruger should be safe to shoot. Just load 5 rounds and carry with the hammer on an empty chamber.

The "reason" Ruger recalled these is a Liability Issue. Without the "Safety Modification" installed in one of these guns, it is absolutely "Mandatory" you carry the gun with an EMPTY Chamber under the hammer. If Not carried this way, the hammer and firing pin actually rest on the primer of a cartridge if loaded under the hammer. Of course, this is asking for an un-intended discharge......
These guns have been around since the early 50's and have been involved in their share of "shot legs, etc." over the years. Installation of the Transfer Bar safety allows the gun to be loaded completely and the hammer can be down on a loaded chamber.....Now a "6 shooter" but without the traditional 4 clicks.
As for me, I have two of these....one that had the Safety Modification and one that did't. I put the old parts back in the one that was Modified because I didn't want to "Re-Learn" many years of using them and felt I was asking for trouble with one that didn't operate exactly like the other one. Easier to do what I always did than to learn over again and become adapt at "doing what I should be doing.........."

I have 2 Ruger Blackhawks. One in .357 and the other .30 Carbine. They are the older 3 screws, and I have left them that way so that they are the same as the other cowboy six shooters I have.

I own 3-screw Single sixes, Blackhawks, a Super Bearcat and a Super Blackhawk. NONE have the factory CYA modification. I carry them with an empty chamber under the hammer. This was common knowledge until a survivors' lawsuit resulted in a huge cash award levied against Ruger.
The transfer bar modification changes the feel of the gun's action, and frankly, I resent (just a little) being told, in effect, that I am less to be trusted with the 168-year-old design than a gun owner of the 19th century

Yep, you just need to treat an unconverted Ruger as a Colt SAA revolver. I like to quote Jeff Cooper on this one(from the 70s):
"Guns are machines and are not foolproof, fools should keep their hands off machinery"
As to value, certain 3 screws do bring more money. They made a boatload of 357s and 44s(super blackhawk) and these dont seem to bring much more,if any, than new guns. Flat tops in the centerfire chamberings bring high and old model 45s bring alot of money(they only made them 2 years before they went to the new model).0
