I like to heat it up so its more of a liquid. I use a hand torch cause its quicker than a hair dryer or sitting it in the sun. Then I'll use gun oil and a rag. Don't use the torch after you spay gun oil on it. 0 -
Shooters choice removes it fairly quick or if you can find powder blast it comes right off.

You can try brake cleaner which is easily obtained from autozone or any major auto parts store. Use caution as this may discolor the wood on the gun. Since this is a very powerful cleaner/degreaser, you will want to re-oil the moving parts prior to using the gun. Breakfree is probably about the best.
Option no. 2 is Hoppes gun solvent. I hear good things about it.[:)]

We use a Breakfree soaked rag and a clean, dry rag at our shop for our cosmoline soaked parts. It does a pretty good job.

I used mineral spirits, worked great...I got a wallpaper tray, filled it halfway up, and dumped all the disassembled metal in there. About an hour of soaking and it was all clean as a whistle. I used the same on the wood, just brushed it on, let it soak a bit, wipe off, repeat. After I got all off the surface I heated the stock till no more seeped out.

Best way to get it off is to spray it with WD-40 or carb cleaner, get it on nice and heavy then take a match and light it.....NO NO I'M JSUT KIDDING! Don't do that.
Seriously now. Often a non oily solvent and/or just plain heat is the best way to remove it. Some people that live in an area where you have a good hot summer like to hang the gun in the sun and let it heat up and run off then wipe it down real good.
I've also removed cosmoline with a hair dryer and some old fashioned elbow wax (i.e. wiping it down good with a heavy cloth).
I've seen guys soak the gun in mineral spirits for a few days.
But, if you have a wood stock, you want to be careful. You don't want to damage your wood (I know how that sounds so don't pick on me [:D]). You don't want to spray stuff on your stock that is going to settle into the wood and you don't want the cosmoline to settle into the wood. So I suggest just removing the stock completely from the firearm in question and wipe it down first with a dry cloth and get most of the excess cosmoline off then I like to use just warm soapy water on a towel to wipe it down with, don't dunk it into the water as I have seen stocks left too long in lots of water swell up and turn to firewood.0 -
we post about this pretty often but my favorite way is the same way soldiers in the field used to do it,,,,diesel.works great,real easy to clean and not as dangerous as most of the other cleaners people use,If you get it on the wood it will make it dark but just drop the metal parts in a bucket for a few minutes and it will take 90% of it off in the bucket,the rest will be easy to brush or wipe off,use an old toothbrush to get into the tight places and wipe down with an oily rag,,your done

I use a handheld steamer from Walmart.Its in the section with the irons. Blows that crap right off. You can even use it on the stocks. Best 50.00 I ever spent. Brandname is Scunci Steamer. Get a big cheap plastic storage container,hold the parts over it and let 'er rip. Wear some thick rubber gloves and hold the small parts with pliers. The metal gets so hot you can't touch it. It even steams out some of the small dings in the stock. 0 -
Sharpshooter nailed it. diesel or carosine both work great and you don't have to use too much elbo grease.

I am not sure if it is the best way, but it is the best way that I have found and that is to use Ketone. Absulutly cuts through cosmoline fast.
I do what ever the voices in my wifes head tells me to dosarcastic joke0
