17 HMR Accuracy reply

Didn't expect so many responses, thanks so much. First the barrel is free floated and it does flex if squeezed at the forend. Second, the two days I shot it at the range, there was a strong tail wind blowing downrange, but not across. The scope is mounted solidly. The trigger has a bit of creep in it, not equiped with the accu-trigger. I am inclined to blame the wind since no brand of ammo was better than another. What I'll do is wait for a calm day, rare here in central Jersey, and wring it out some more. I have the 243 I mentioned and a 204 in Remington ADL which are both very accurate so if this little 17 is going to be so susceptible to the wind, then who needs it. Meantime I'll have a gunsmith look at it and get back to you guys. Thanks for all of your input, it is appreciated.

An afterthought, what does it mean that the topic is locked. I had to open a new topic to respond to you.

    It means the moderator thought there had been enough responses to your post and the question was answered. I'm kind of a newbie and have many amatuerish questions so they get answered very quickly and all my topics get locked[:D]

    In the "Ask the Experts" Forum, they lock the posts usually after 10 replys. This is because usually by then the question has been answered and any further replys is just discussion.

    P.S. I think that the wind, even if it was a tailwind, is what is causing such poor groups. Take it back out on a calm day. You wont belive how accurate these little guys can be, but they are very susceptible to wind.

    I feel you got such a response because this is a new cartridge with unbelievable accurracy for a rim fire cartridge.
    I have a CZ in 17HMR and it's the most accurate rim fire I've ever shot, and then to read about the groups you were getting, something has got to be wrong.
    I would be interested in hearing later on what you found out.
    PS If all else fails an old gunsmith told me once, " If you want to shoot a tight group, shoot one round."
