S&W Model 60 or Ruger 101
I am about to buy a new carry gun and want a .357 snubby.Tell me the good and bads of the Smith Model 60 and the Ruger SP 101.They both look and feel good and are about the same price.

The Ruger is built like a tank. Mine has a real nice double action trigger. Another vote for the SP101.

I'll have to agree with Python. My SP101 is also a built like a tank.
The stainless finish does not show ANY WEAR even with years of intermittant carry in a variety of holsters. It is comfortable to shoot even with .357 mag 125 gr. hollowpoints. What more could I ask from a carry gun ?0 -
Ruger makes a fine product, I prefer the Smith. If possible, shoot one of each and see which suits you better.
In a snubby you aren't getting that much more performance out of the .357 than you would a .38. You might want to consider a S&W model 36.

I've heard a lot of the "built like a tank" description of the SP101. However, after owning one for awhile, I'd suggest a potential buyer consider the relative flimsy cylinder attachment when the cylinder is open. If the gun isn't to be carried much or live in a drawer it's okay but it you want to depend on it after being knocked around there are better choices. 0 -
I would go with the best trigger. No sense buying a pistol built like a tank if the trigger isn't smooth. Give them a side by side trigger test and see if you discern a difference. Pick the one that fits you and is comfortable. I can't say that either would be a "wrong" choice but I am partial to Smith & Wesson.

"Built like a tank" is good, but are you really going to push this gun to its limit with so many full-power .357 magnum rounds that the extra strength is going to matter? I can't deny its possible, but I've never heard of someone shooting their Smith to the point where it failed!
Smith 60 weighs 21.5 ounces in the 2-1/8" inch barrel, 6-9/16" length.
Ruger SP101 weights 25 ounces in the 2-1/4" inch barrel, 7-1/8" inch length.
So the 60 is a bit lighter, a bit more compact, and likely has a better trigger (particularly single action). They are fairly comparable, but for CCW purposes, I'd give a slight edge to the Smith.0 -
Unless they've changed things, the Smith 60 was the Chief Special, strictly 38 Spl. It was 5 shot and was really tiny. Back when I carried a sidearm for work I had two that got most of the use; a model 60 stainless 38 Spl, 2", round grip and a model 66 2 1/2" stainless 357 round grip. the 66 was considerably heavier, but it was a much more useable gun. It had adjustable sights, a leaf spring on the hammer, and from my point of view was a much better gun. I kept the 66 for years while the 60 was traded for a pre-64 model 70 featherweight 30-06, which I still have. 0 -

Yes, they did change things. The model 60 is now a .357 Magnum.

Both are very good guns, but the S&W 60 is lighter to carry and has a slightly shorter trigger reset. On the other hand because of the weight the Ruger SP 101 is much more comfortable to shoot heavy loads out of. Note: If you are going to shoot 357 magnums out of them don't use anything heavier then a 125 gr. bullet. The 158's are brutal.
