H and R shotgun problems

I bought a usedH&R 16 gauge (topper m48?) and have had periodic misfirings with it. The pin would only put a small dimple in the primer. This would happen several time in a row if i left the shell in the chamber or if i reseated it.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem. The resaon I ask is that its been at the gunsmith 4 times and they can't seem to isolate the problem. They now say something about bushings? And that the hole drilled for the firing pin is off?

The reason I haven't given anymore information on the gun is that I can't remember what it looks like anymore.

    Hi. It's highly unlikely the firing pin hole is off. I'd start by taking the action apart and cleaning it. Then I'd look at the springs. You may need to replace the mainspring and the firing pin spring. Relax. Gunparts has Topper parts for cheap.     YOUR FIRING PIN IS NOT STRIKING THE PRIMER
    HARD ENOUGH TO MAKE IT GO BANG

    i had the same problem on a 12 gauge
    i ground a little off the hammer
    i took the forearm off then the barrel
    cocked the hammer back and ground it down
    a few 1/1000's in an inch
    that fixed the problem still working to this day

    YOU MUST BE CARFUL THOUGH IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH
    OFF THE FIRING PIN WILL PEIRCE THE PRIMER
    THAT WILL BE A BAD THING...
    replace the pin and springs

    I'm working on a .410 at the moment and ordered a new firing pin. Some of these had a rebound spring to pull the firing pin back when you open the action but some did not. Look to see if the end of the firing pin has been dragging on the ejector. Mine was and the pin is worn shorter as well as pointed. Also, look to see if the firing pin has a lot of crud in its hole as well. The others are probably more on target than I am but this is what was going on with mine.

    If this has bee nto the gunsmith 4 times already and he cant fix it then you got a bigger problem than you need. You have probably paid the gunsmith twice already for what the gun is worth. Might be time for a new one huh ?

    Well as it happens I have one of these puppies on my kitchen table. A common problem with these is foriegn material falling between the hammer and frame. Break open hold trigger back and push hammer forward with your thumb. The firing pin should be stiking out about 3/32" now. When pushing hammer forward there should only be a light springy resistance.
    The firing pin should have a nice smooth radius on both ends and should move freely and spring back completly everytime.
    Radius missing replace firing pin
    don' spring forward replace firing pin spring. (I would replace pin too if i had to take it a part).
    Hard to push hammer foward and firing pin move freely... look for foriegn matter between hammer and frame.
    Firing pin is hard to push foward ... remove clean inspect spring and pin

    I understand where all of you are coming from and the smith has tightened the spring and it still has missfirings. It funny because out of a box of 20 i'll have 7 shells that wont fire. Let me clarify myself. Do all of these issues you have brought up cause the pin to SOMETIMES not strike hard enough?

    Have you tried different types of ammo ?

    This is the main thing I hate From all these gun laws. I know I could fix this thing with my eyes closed if I had it in my hands.
    It there any play in the barrel when it is closed? is it the original barrel for the receiver? Do you have 20 ga shells mixed in you box of 16's (I had a friend do that, darn near blew his head of too)
    It's got to be the ammo... if everthing else is right'

    I have not tried different ammo. Just the Federals that Walmart sells.

    I think its the orginal barrel... I don't remember the numbers being different.

    I'm sure they aren't 20 gauge.

    So I guess its the ammo? I'm not trying to belabor the point just trying to understand... What in the ammo would cause this to occur?
