DPMS 7.62 X 39 AR-15 Upper

I've been considering purchasing a DPMS 7.62 X 39 upper for my AR-15. Has anyone had any experiences with this product? I have a Bushmaster AR now and thought it may be better to purchase 7.62 upper rather than an AK. Thanks in advance for any comments.

    The AR platform is great in many respects. The AK, in other ways, is equally due it's own cudos. The AK is not as flexable as the AR but is tougher and more reliable. AR 7.62x39 conversion parts are expensive compared to a complete AK. If I wanted to expand my AR to another caliber I'd be thinking the new 270cal round that the military is going to as it will also work with the same lower assembly.

    You can get 2 AK's for the price of doing the conversion and they will be alot more fun [:D][:D][:D]. Probably the biggest draw back to the AR conversion is finding mags that will work. You can use 20rd AR mags that will hold ~8rds 7.62x39. I know they make some other mags that are just for the 7.62x39 but they are spendy and hard to find. One of the big problems is the 7.62x39 round needs a curve mag to feed properly and AR mag wells are straight causing a hang up.

    I have a Colt upper in 7.62x39 and its a lot of fun. I did have to do some modifications to it so that it would shoot cheap ammo. Cheap Russian ammo has the primers placed deeper in the case than American ammo. I modified the firing pin to protrude out more and have had no problems. I feel if you cant shoot the cheap ammo in 7.62x39 whats the sense in having it. Good mags are hard to find, the brand that works is USA. I dont know if they are still in business because they are hard to find. They are ugly as they are a AR upper portion welded to a AK lower but they work great. I recently turned a used 30 rd. one down at a gun show for 20.00. (I have four of them) They usually go for 35.00 and up at auction sites. The cheap mags that you see at say Cheaper Than Dirt or at the cheap magazine table at a gun show are junk. they wont work at all. I have a Romanian Ak-47, and while it goes bang every time and is fun to bump fire it shoots 4" 100 yd groups while the AR shoots 2" groups with the same ammo. I dont really see much of a cost savings here. If you like the AR-15 platform or are mounting a scope and want better accuracy get the AR-15 upper. But it would only cost a little more to buy a quality AK-47 like the Arsenal of Bulgaria or Robinson Arms Brands and they might shoot better than my Romanian. Whatever you get it will be fun.
