.45 LC as a self-defense round?
Relatively low recoil with a large, heavy bullet... is there any reason not to use this in a carry weapon?
I know most cowboy shooters are only 6-shot and take a long time to reload, but I'm only interested in the round itself, not the gun that fires it as far as the question of "why not?" goes.
I mean, it seemed to serve those Old West folks just fine...

I think the round itself is probably one of the best. Its head and shoulders above many of the light calibers used for personal protection. YOu will probably get comments on what it is used in (weapon) but the 45LC is one to reckon with. 0 -
I think that's why Taurus chambered one of their compact frame handguns for it, could be great for field protection as well as against two legged critters 0 -
There was an article in the "american handgunner" (I think) titled "The .45 Colt sucks!". The author explained that, unless you can use "Ruger Only" loads, a .45 ACP will have the same ballistics, more ammo options and allows the use of moon clips for faster reloads. Also, the .45 Colt is known to be sensitive to powder placement in the casing. For a CCW weapon that's most likely going to be carried nose down it could cause velocity spikes. This is mostly true for light loads. Some ammo manufacturers were rumored to be working on the issue.
I'm not trying to start anything here, I still think that the .45 Colt is the only way to go for a SAA but it might not be the best otion for CCW.
JimmyJack was talking about the Taurus revolvers, is also worth noting that for the same size/weight you could be carrying 7 rounds of .357

The 45LC has more power then the great 45ACP, whats not to like. If you reload then it can be even better as you can tailor the bullet and velosity for your intended circumstance. 0 -
Ern, again I'm only talking about factory loads. I do know that the .45 Colt can be reloaded to be a freakin hand cannon but I doubt that I would be enjoyable in a CCW gun or safe in anything else than a Ruger or Freedom Arms. Also most agree that, if you ever have to use your gun, you're alot better off with factory loads when going to court.
I would say, .45 Colt in a large single action for hunting? Great!
In a compact frame for CCW? There might be better options...

Been killing bandidos for about 140 years, it's gotta be good[;)] 45 ACP was basically designed with the 45 Colt ballistics in mind

Already been said, the cartridge is not the problem for ccw, the choice of weapon is. 45lc is my favorite in SAA.

I think it's a great round. I've carried a SAA for years and never had a moments doubt about relying on it. Slow to reload maybe but how many defensive shots are you going to fire? And that huge hole the badguy is facing is another deterent. I use cast bullets, they have a Terminal Sectional Density that makes them far more lethal than paper ballistics show. I reload so I use Unique which is a great powder for the round and isn't posistion sensitive. You can also find double action revolvers in 45CLT. For me...it's 45 Colt, 45 acp...44 Special....one of those three is always with me. 0 -

Why bother when .357 revolvers are more common, the rounds are more readily available, and a wider variety of ammo is available (including more powerful rounds)? 0
