HELP ! ! ! ! ! PLEASE ! ! !

i recently (if you call january recently) sent my springfield armory mil spec(not GI) 1911 to a gunsmith at gander mountain (in chambersburg Pa.)to have alot of work done on it.

the work to be done was *match threaded barrel and full profile comp instalation, ed brown beavertail instalation, chip mckormick hammer instaled and a trigger job (mckormick series 70 sear, sear spring, match disconector, and a wilson combat custom tune spring kit)
all of this was included when the gun was sent to him


almost 2 months later i finaly got it back!
now for the inevitable . . . . . took it to the range and TRIED to feed it two boxes of black hills 230 gr ammo BUT out of the 100 rounds fired not one single mag went through without at least one jam ! ! ! ! ! ! !

called said gunsmith and he told me he put 5 mags of blazer brass and american eagle through it flawlessly and it shot a 1" group at 25 yards

well i tried both thos brands today and got the same results as i did the the black hills ammo. the most common jam was the round either "stovepiping" or getting stuck on the extractor. neither of these jams were occuring befor i sent the gun out

anyone got any ideas why it might be doing this?

    You have a comp on it, do you know the spring weight?

    Don't panic yet, these things are like race cars, they require a bit of tweaking, if for some reason you have a to heavy spring it would do exactly as you describe, and my guess is you do, if you do not have several to find out which one works in your gun, for now try this, lock your slide back for a few days to set the spring a little bit , and I cannot as well as anyone else tell you exactly what spring to put in your comp gun, we can come close, but you will need to try several to find out which one feed correctly and does not beat the frame to death at the same time

    i have had the same experience with gander...my friend has had a 870 there now for over five months tring to get it blued.....(rochester ny)..the stuff they sell though other than the gunsmith dept. i have had no problem with..good luck

    Hello with any semi auto pistol you have to match the pistol with the loads AND the shooter.My suggestion is to order a spring pack from brownell's . With the spring you now have in the pistol put in ONE round and fire the gun. Does the slide stay locked back ?? if the answer is no then install a next lighter spring . Dont go to a super light spring as this will cause the slide to slam to the rear and beat up the frame and slide. What you are tring to do is get the slide to cycle all the way to the rear . A new fitted gun needs to have plenty of lube . The heavier the slide and barrel"yours has a comp" the heavier the load needs to be . If you are useing factory loads then you need to install lighter spring. The lighter the shooter and the grip "LIMP WRIST" can also effect the operation.I am tall and very thin so I need heavier loads.Try your pistol with your biggest heaviest friend shooting the gun ."PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    Sorry to hear that You've experianced a problem with a Custom Gunsmithing job...But keep in Mind that Its not allowed on the Forums to Blatently Condem a Gunsmith or a Company.....! That would come under the heading of Defamation of Caractor....Please Re-Read the Posting Guidelines..............
    Contact the Company that did the Work which You contracted for...I'm sure that they will endeavor to make Good on the problem and work with You to resolve this problem..............

    i appologize . . . i am not trying to condem a gunsmith or company.
    i am simply stating what happened with my experience thus far and i am just a lil frustrated and looking for sugestions



    now on to the busness at hand . . . i beleive that it has a 10lb spring in it. the idea that the spring is to heavy is not new, my friend stated that he observed the slide moving back very slowly.

    One other possibility is that you are not folding it rigid when you shoot it.

    Hello MR 460 If you have a 10 pound spring and the gun does not work the slide you need to see a gunsmith. Either there is lack of oil or the slide is too tight or you have weak loads or you are not holding the gun firm enough this is a much lighter then normal spring .I don't think they even make one lighter then this.If you live in Va. I can help you or send to a 1911 master pistol smith

    I agree with Perryshooter. I use a 10lb spring in my guns and with an UltraDot on the slide they throw 185 gr SWC at 650fps with no problems. Make sure its lubed up real well including the barrel to bushing fit. If that bushing is real tight it will give those problems and is frequently overlooked as a lube point. I would be real careful shooting to many "off the shelf" 45's with a 10 lb spring unless you know a good dentist. Infact when you buy those springs from Brownell's they will have a warning on them to shoot reduced loads only.
