BFR Revolver 45/70 Govt.
Hey,
I have a 45/70 BFR Revolver with 7 1/2 barrel and was wondering if there is anyone else who has one that has found a good load? I tried factory ammo, but as i thought it wasn't even burning all the powder.

I would consult with the makers of the gun.
Last year at the Shot Show I had a great conversation with the designer, who was very informative about it.
In such a short barrel and the capacity of the 45-70 you will be hard pressed to utilize/burn all the powder intended for a longer carbine barrel dwell time.
There are some companies (I believe Black Hills may be one) that makes factory ammo meant to be fired in the shorter barrels.
But as you relate you intend to load your own, then that call to the manufacturer is suggested.

well i might be able to give you some help on this.. i've had my BFR 45-70 10"bbl for about a year now, only a few boxes of factory ammo out of it... and about 6-800 rds of handloads... my chronygraphed loads range from 1300 to over 1800 fps, i think i'm being too picky with my accuracy since i'm mainly a rifle shooter and most of my rifles with handloads all shoot sub moa at 100 yds. i have a 2x6 bushnell 32mm pistol scope, stainless to match the pistol, no problems with the scope and the all the recoil from the hotloads either. now onto your question, i can shoot anywhere from 1-3 inch groups at 75 yards off a bench with it, i am having trouble finding a consistent load.... i may have already found it and i'm having problems with shooter error... most of all my recipes have been from the book, a few i've dabbled with using my own judgement, i dont' have my reloading notes for this with me right now but i'll be more than glad to get them and relay some info for you, i didnt like the remington 300 gr jhp's at the higher velocities... the jackets where coming off the lead cores, but shot fine at the mid range velocities and accuracy was good for 75 yds and under i mainly use seirra 300 gr jhp's and have used barnes 250 gr hollow points as well as 300 gr spitzers, since they're so damn expensive to buy the bullets i havent played with those loads much... let me know if this helps and any other questions you have 0 -
Thanks Remington Nut. I haven't had the chance to shoot them yet, but i loaded some Remington 300 Gr. JHP with IMR 3031 powder and am gonna test them out. They are a medium load and im not too worried about them coming apart because the velocities won't be quite as high out of my 7 1/2 in bbl, as your 10 in. Granted every gun shoots different, if you ever find a load that shoots great in your gun let me and i will let you know if i find one. I think if these don't shoot the best i may try the 300 gr. speer hot cores. Any experience shooting these? 0 -
no i haven't shot the speer's yet, you should have pretty good results with the remington's, one thing that i've noticed is getting a consistent crimp helps alot with your accuracy, i've also read but havent done this yet... some people actually use 1 die to seat the bullet and a seperate die to crimp with 0
