7mm Rem. Mag
What are some pros and cons of this cartrigde? How does it compare to a .270? Is this a good cartridge for deer and elk? Any help would be great.

Good Deer or Elk Cartridge yes, faster than a 270 and can use heavier bullets but ( there's always a big but) it will have more kick than a 270. The .270 has a limited selection of bullet weights for hunting ( mostly 130 and 150 grain) and the choice for the 7 mag gets a little better ( 140 160 and 175 grain). Both are considered good Deer and Elk cartridges however in my opinion a good 30/06 will do what you are asking too with a far greater choice of bullet weights. If you had your heart set on only a 270 or 7 mag I'd go with the 270 cuz I don't like the additional recoil and muzzle blast from the 7 mag. Just my opinion but it's based on experience not some love affair with a certain caliber or cartridge. 0 -
Pros; It shoots flat, it has plenty of power for North American game. There are lots of good bullets available for it. It is one of the loads you may find in a hardware store in Nowheresville.
Cons; Can kick like a mule with heavy bullets and hot loads. It tends to be hard on barrels when shooting fast. It is a bit overkill for white tails unless you are shooting them in the next county.0 -
I use a 7 mag for elk and occasionally for mule deer. Recoil is actually less than a .30-06 with same rifle and bullet weight, but not by a lot. It will punish you at the range, but you never notice in the hunting field. Same with -06. It is a great western rifle, but probably overkill for eastern hunts unless you are a bean field shooter. 0 -
I have both the 7mm and the .270, if I could only have one it would be the 7mm. Yes the .270 is a great round but I've had my remy adl for 20 years worth of hunting and never really seen where it has caused too much damage. Granted the whitetails up here in northern Mn. are big but every one I've shot has been with the 7mm mag and 150 grain core-lokts. No complaints. Plus the 7mm mag does better out west and up to ak. 0 -
I am a fan of the Rem 700 in 7mm mag. I have taken several deer with it and have yet to have one run off more than 25 yards. Federal Premium bullets work great. It is a great choice if you do a lot of field hunting like I do. The .270 I have shot in the past has less recoil, but if you decide to hunt elk I think you would be better off with the 7mm.

One of my favorites of all the chamberings. With 162gr and up pills, it is a long haul caliber plenty capable of 500yd harvests on larger game than whitetail. The 7mmrem also in MHO has far less recoil than the same weight rifle in 300win mag, with only MINIMALY less impact energy.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
