Mosin Nagant**effective range????

Hello, Could someone out there tell me what the effective range is for these rifles?

    Effectively the 7.62x54R has the same abilities as the 30-06 or the .308win. I think it is still the primary cartridge for the Dragonov sniper rifles and the Ruski medium machine guns. If you want a hard cold number of yards that is a matter of opinion. In battle a wound is almost as good as a kill, so they probably would call the effective range about 800yds. In hunting a wounded animal at extreem range is often lost. So I'd call it 400yds tops for hunting, though personally I wouldn't use the round at over 250yds socpe sighted and 150yds with iron sights. The rifles themselves vary in barrel length and condition so they become a judgement all in themselves that can't be addressed here, but I doubt that the long barreled rifles got much more velosity and accuracy out of the ammo then the shorter versions, especially with more modern ammo.

    I will tell you that the great Finnish sniper, Simo Haya, made over 500 kills with a Finnish Mosin Nagant, M28. He used iron sights, no scope, and he usually shot at ranges in excess of 400 yards.

    Good, accurate cartridge in an ugly but effective operating system. Best one of the bunch that I own is a Finn M-39(shoots better than my Finn 27) that will grouop 'em up around an inch with the open, stock sights. There were confirmed incidents wherein Soviet marksmen (and Women, lest we forget) took down German soldiers from 8oo plus meters. Those kind of shots should be considered the exception, not the rule. The various moisins held many world records for a goodly number of years and cannot be dismissed out of hand because of their quirkiness.
