Handload-22-Hornet (Wildcat?)

Interested in handload info for 22-Hornet or Wildcat version.
For paper accuracy: Balistic-Tip?
For varmits: best grain, best power, (velocity) (accuracy)?
maxi-load for above?.
I read most hand-load manuals, looking for experienced comments,
and suggestions. Really want to get into this caliber (range).

    It depends on the rifle you're shooting it in but I've found IMR 4227 the most accurate with AA 1680 a close second. In a standard Hornet I run 45 gr. bullets at a little over 2700 fps. I musy have fired a million Hornet rounds....it's fun to shoot

    If you want a wildcat in this range the K-Hornet is hard to beat.

    You might want to try some of the used book stores for slightly older reloading manuals which generally have some information on the regular Hornet.

    The K-Hornet is a terrific way to get good case performance from this cartridge. As most agree, that's the reason not the gain in velocity, at least in this instance.

    When you've got the 22 Hornet down pat, you might want to look into the 17 Hornet...

    I have 4 K-Hornets and one standard Hornet. I have been shooting the Hornets since 1960. I use the same load for both standard Hornet and K-Hornets. My standard load now is Remington Brass, CCI SMALL PISTOL primer and 13.5 grs of AA 1680 powder with James Calhoon 37 gr bullets. The small pistol primer seems to give better accuracy in the small Hornet cases and there is no cratering of the primer. In the past I used 4227 and 2400 powders and 46 gr HP bullets with good results. The 1680 load is not a hot load but gives very good practical accuracy on prairie dogs. I have fired thousands of rounds of the 1680 loads over the last 10 years. Love my Hornets !!!!![:D]

    On my last post I forgot to mention one thing.
    Fireforming brass to K-Hornet when using Remington Brass normally runs about 3% case failure(cracked necks etc.) The last time I used W-W brass failure rate was about 50%. I fireform using full charges and point of impact is the same as other loads.
    Fun cartridge to shoot. Easy to shoot prairie dogs for prolonged sessions with no sore shoulders.

    I am really fond of IMR 4227 to the point of excluding all other powders except occasionally AA2015 BR. My pet load (regular hornet) is RP brass ( the Winnie stuff SUCKS!@) Using a Winchester Small pistol Magnum primer, sierra ".224 HP's 40 grain bulelts and 10.5 to 11 grains of IMR 4227 with a COL of 1.723. This clocks in the mid 2800's and has really produced for me! The Ballistic tips you mentioned I feel are less than a good idea; won't feed from the magazine normally. I of course have the same problem with the little Sierra's, but the accuracy is worth the hassle.
