P-64 mag mod

This modification allows the P-64 pistol to eat Silver Bear Hollow Point rounds with ease, providing a tremendous savings in ammunition
expenditures.

The inward turned part of the lips of the magazine can be trimmed back about 1/16th of an inch without danger of changing the tilt
of the cartridge and this improves loading and assures that the head of the cartridge clears the lips soon enough to prevent jamming with the Silver Bear ammunition, which is only $5.50 a box of fifty at AIM.

When filing, keep the length of the lips as equal as possible, and file a gentle curve concentrating on the point of the lips, not the lower sides. When through trimming, smooth you work with 400 or 600 wet-or-dry sandpaper with a little WD-40. Wipe exposed metal very clean with a paper towel, and apply some cold blue (like Birchwood Casey Double Blue) with a cuetip, let set 30 seconds, and with a little cold water on the other end of the cuetip, wipe the bluing off, stabilizing the chemical reaction. Reassemble the mag and go to the range. Shoot about 200 rounds of Silver Bear (FMJ or HP) and you'll find that the double actiion trigger pull has improved,
eleminating the need to trim any springs. This is what I have done and this is to relay my experience only. Depending on a bunch of variables, like your particular speciman P-64 and your particular skills, your experience may vary. I can't be responsible for things I cannot control, so if you have any fears, go to a gunsmith or seek another solutiion, i.e. Sellier&Bellot FMJ or Hornady at a higher price. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times.

    Hey Frog, thanks for the info. I have two I haven't even shot yet, and might not. The reason being is I might want to pass down unfired examples to my two daughters. I might have to buy another just to shoot it. I was recently treasones and on another board asking questions about the P-64. It looks like there may be a sevear shortage of magazines for these developing in the USA. I heard there is a Polish auction site similar to ebay that sells them, though.

    A couple of questions, I bought a Polish P-64 holster, and it will only fit without a mag installed in the pistol. I am guessing the holsters out there were designed for P64's without the finger rest, the holsters may fit eariler P64's that did not have the finger rest styled magazine. Any info on that?

    It is starting to look like what may be necessary is to modify existing, more plentiful magazines to work in the P64. That is assuming there is a shortage on magazines (unless you bid on them on a Polish Ebay, and seller will ship from Poland). Have you looked at any other magazines that may be modified for the P64?

    The magazine question had occurred to me. The first pair I bought were such beauties, issue: 1967, excellent condition with a reasonable DA pull and magazines that were unscratched and matching.
    A friend at our seniors pool club was interested in one for carry after he saw one of my 67s and, starting to feel defensive of keeping the pair together for posterity, I ordered a second pair.

    The boys at the warehouse just grab the next couple to come up from the bin, I'm sure. I got two, vintage l973, and a dissapointment when they arrived. They were not nearly preserved as well, and the grips and the magazines were nicked and scratched. And, on the subject, the second magazine with each gun had a different armory inventory number scratched in with the electric engraver. What this indicated to me was that they were about out of P-64s and were robbing magazines ahead of my order, if you know what I mean. The DA action on the 73s was abominal compared to the l967s. Of course, as
    a carry gun, that doesn't affect my shooting; because it has a genuine decocking mechanism, I carry one in the chamber and only have to push off safety and thumb the hammer back and I'm ready to fire, single-action all the way. The single-action snap is sweet on all four pistols, and the accuracy is remarkable. These little pistols have been in police service over there for more than 30 years, many still are. That means they have many more pros than cons
    and have become a favorite piece for many, many persons in service who need reliability and effectiveness.

    I put the 67s up, am selling my friend one of the 73s, and I have ground off the grip projection on the mags of the 73 I'm keeping for
    personal protection, making it even smoother for really fast deployability.

    I don't know anything about the holsters, sorry.

    I saw P-64 mags on sale somewhere on the net for $20.00 apiece. I'll
    look around and let you know.[^]
