Gunpowder prices?
Im new to this forum and recently discovered that buying gunpowder is a joke lately!I live here in fresno, california and the prices for powder are outrages. A local gun shops sells 8lbs of vargent for 180:00.The local gunshops arent stocking powder because they say they have to order in 200 lb lots and also have to pay the hazmat fees to, which result in the high prices.Im looking at military surplus pulled powder and there are no great deals to be seen either(fees and shipping charges. Today in fresno,I went to the local gunshow( a friend told me about it),after paying 10 bucks and a 30 minute drive, i was so dissapointed.There was only 1 booth that sold reloading supplies.Yes, they didnt stock the 8lb kegs of anything, and were basically sold out of other powder too! I have a 30-06 now and im starting to reload again(its been 8 years )and i see that things are getting hard to find and pricy.Does anybody have information on powders for a 30-06 thats reasonable? From military surplus to new! Also there is a big gun show in Reno this april 8, 9, 10! Im wondering if anybody from the fresno area plans on going up there? If you are ,Id like you to contact me!

richard 67, I feel for you man. I live close to Widener's here in east Tennessee and I can buy wholesale on about anything to do with powder, bullets, loading dies, etc.. They carry military surplus powders that the last time I checked were under $90.00 for an 8 lb can. Of course you would have to pay the haz-mat shipping and regular shipping but it still would not be near as much as the locals are charging you. On loading for the 30/06 I would recommend 4895 powder for a garand or other semi-auto or if a bolt rifle I would give the IMR 4350 a try. Widener's number is 1-800-615-3006. 0 -
Pinhead, thanks for feeling some of my pain,lol. It seems like there making it almost to the point to were you wont be able to reload because of the high prices. There is some decent deals at www.patsreloading.com and http://www.iidbs.com/hitech has some stuff to. I did check out wideners and im eye balling there imr 4895 military pulled surplus powder. I wish i had enough friends to go in a bunch of powder to split the cost . I was hopeing to get a deal on powder at the local gunshows, but that was a foolish dream too! Im trying to work a deal with MIWALL CORP to bring more powder down to fresno when they do there next show, ill see how that goes, but wont hold my breath.All i know is my next purchase of powder will be BIG! 0 -
When I last bought powder Graf & Sons was a lot more reasonable than Widener's. You still get hit with a $20 hazmat fee but you can ship 4 - 8 lb kegs for one fee. Make a mix and match bulk purchase with your buddies... Of course, you'd better find out first if you can ship powder to Kalifornia.

The price of powder has gone through the roof where I live to. I like Accurate Arms powders. The price locally has escalated to the point that a pound of it is going to set you back, $22/$23 out the door.
What I did was order a 8 lb jug of 2230-C ( same burning rate as Varget ) from Natchez www.natchezss.com The powder was $60, HazMat & Shipping came to $36. It works out to $12 a pound, which is tolerable.
Next time around I'm going to order some of Jeff Bartlett's powders www.gibrass.com there going to be slightly more expensive then that deal from Natchez, but he has a better selection.

Accurate 2230C Powder from natches does seem to be the best deal so far.Jeff Bartlett's powders has a little more selection of surplus powders, but none that i recognise that can be used for 30-06? Thank you for that information!

I used to live in Kalifornia also. When my wife was fortunate enough to be transfered to Oregon, it was like I had excaped to a free country.
I don't want to make you feel any worse, but imagine going from $65 plus in transaction fees, sales tax, locks, and a 10 day waiting period to no high cap/"assault" weapons ban, no sales tax, instant background check, and a $10 transfer fee. It's also a "shall issue" state for CCW permits. I was like a kid who had just won the lottery after I got my Oregon drivers license.
There is a local discount chain, Bi-Mart, that sells reloading supplies and several times a year puts them on sale. For example 1 pound of Win748 is $18, but 3-4 times a year ALL powder is $2 per pound off.
I can remember going to a Reno gun shop and seeing powder prices 40%-50% less than Kalifornia also.

Im allready crying here-boo hoo hoo!Things have even gotten worse for me.I was laid off today !!Thats right! Seems my company which i worked for 14 years(cnc machinist) bought a plant in tijuana mexico.They laid off 70 workers and moved all machining , welding and fabrication down there.Im just bummed about it I was also told there wages per hour in tijuana is 2:40 an hour!! Id love to leave this state, but i have all of my family and friends here.
Also, when i left work with my last paycheck.I cashed it and went to the rip off gunshop and bought a 1 lb can of varget -for the total price with taxes of 27:26 .Im completely out of powder, so i feel i was double screwed today. But at least the good news is im going to the range with my reloads,lol!
Im still on the look out for a big quanity of powder somewere!

Im curious how that powder AA 2230c is for 30-06 reloads? I mean what is the accuracy like and with what weight of bullits? If i dont hear anything in the next couple of days, I plan on doing a 16 lb order of powder somewere. Most likely natchez!

[8D]Well richard, it seems as though Lyman has AA2230c listed for the 308/30-06, but only in the 150gr (SP) .308 dia bullet-and then show it gives some of their safer pressures. I read somewhere that the AA2230c was DEVELOPED for the .223/.308, but I think that was for the military 5.56/7.62x51mm-oh well ,I've got A Rem 700 bull bbl.223 and several Weatherby 30-06- and 8 lbs of AA2230c plus a lot of diff. IMR powders -so we'll see[:p][:p][:p][:D]

Richard, If you go to Reno you can't buy gun powder at the show, Hilton does not allow powder in the building, but go to the new Sportsman Warehouse Store in town and you will get the best price on powder that I've found, also all other items, Nevada does have sales tax 7+% but still very good prices. I plan on useing 168 grain bullets and a mixture of 150 grain too.Ill ask around a bit more about this powder.Have you used rl-15? Im hearing some goos things about it.I dont even know who manufactures it? They say its awesome for .308 and 30-06!
I am a fan of imr powders and hodgdon for rifles.

Les,I hear great things about that show in reno.I wish i could go! I know the prices are awesome! I wasnt aware they didnt sell powder? A very good thing to know ,But that seems a bit odd to me. Ever come down to fresno? LOL!
Also, was sent this from a reader in california: The whole situation really sucks and largly from fedral haz-mat fees. The feds and the
envirionmentalists would like to drive up fees even higher, the feds so they can make money off of it, and the enviros and the leftist prohibitionists so they can make reloading costs prohibitive.

Les, contacted the sportman warehouse, they have what i want in stock but unfortunatly, its about the same price as all other online supply stores.But here is what he said and price doesnt inlude taxes: THANKS FOR THE INTREST IN OUT STORE, THE PRICE ON THE POWDER IS $110.00 FOR THE 4350 AND $117.99 FOR THE VARGET.
