Rem 870 repalcement barrel

Can anyone suggest replacement barrel out there that will reduce the length to around the legal limit for a 12 gauge Remington 870? I see 28's and 26's what about 18 or 16 inches? I want to be able to have it for my wife to use a a PD gun and me to use for the ducks and rabid squirrels.

  Check www.Cabelas.com and www.sportsmansguide.com. Look for the slug type barrels. There are both fully rifled and those that are smooth bore with Rem Choke thread at the end so you can have whatever you want for choke. They also are made by Hastings, Mossberg, and I think even Ithaca for the 870. Prices range from $90 to $300. Look around at local gun shops and gun shows, you may find trade-in barrels. Also loook here on GB under gun parts barrels. You might even try flea bay. Most manufacturers stay at the 20" length and up. Remember anything under 18" will definately get someone's attention and you WILL do time for it. It is not legal to be under 18" so it is best to be longer so there is no question from the authorities. Also, I'm not sure you want to have your wife deal with recoil and muzzle blast from a short 12 ga. and I really wonder if you want to go duck hunting with one either. The swing characteristics are not the greatest. I have a slug barrel with a scope on one. Hunting you don't notice, but it definitely is not something I relish benching or sighting in.

  18" on shotgun , 16" on rifle barrels ,, most barrels will measure 1/2" longer just to be on the safe side

  I would go with the 18 incher although the 20 inch barrel would support a bit longer magazine tube extention for an extra two rounds if you choose, either way you choose make sure its a FACTORY remington barrel because Mossberg and ithaca make replacment barrels now for the remingtons and the quality is NOT the same.The shortest factory remington barrel Cabelas or Gandermountain have is the 20 incher you will have to either call Remington or comb the listings here to find an 18 incher, I am sure an ad in the want list here will produce one in a heart beat.
