Barrel Life on a 300 RUM
How many rounds before I burn the barrel out.

800-1000 rounds seems a little low to me. I have a .338 RUM and I was told I should get at least 3500-4000 out of the barrel before accuracy would start to decline. This came from a veteran gunsmith. A good source if you want to investigate further is chuckhawks.com. Chuck will have an honest accurate answer.

Many of the new super magnums are running very high chamber pressures to generate their enhanced velosities. There have been a number of discusions on this subject concerning the new short mags, you might want to do a search for recent strings. The result was that there is, for the short mags, evidence mounting about reduced barrel life. As I see it to maximize any barrels overall life the key is to keep it cool and clean. This goes double for the new crop of mags, long or short. My rule of thumb is that if I am uncomfortable putting my hand on the barrel, somewhere towards the end of the stock, it is too hot. Even if the life is as low as a 1000 rounds, in reality are you likely to shoot that many in ten or twenty years of target and hunting type shooting? I own a 300WBY and it is not my first choice to take to the range to dump 30 or 40 rounds thru it, unless I intend to take it out hunting. 0 -
I am looking for 1200rnds competitive life from mine. I will be starting to run erosion measurements soon as I have just under 300rnds through the bore.
As far as hunting accuracy life,..I would say an easy 2500rnds or better.
Shooting the RUM hot will definitely increase throat erosion greatly.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
