The rifling (lands/grooves inside a barrel) has a twist rate, expressed in inches per full turn IE 10" twist or 1-10 twist.
There is a optinal external fluting that can be applied in either a streight or sprial pattern.
Damascis barrels (on old shotguns) may have been refered to as "twisted steel", someplace or sometime also.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

twist rate= rate of twist in the bore (tailgunners example, the bullet makes 1 revolution per 10 inches of barrel traveled)
fluting= external flutes cut into the barrel surface to 1. reduce weight 2. increase surface area for increased rigidity 3. increased surface area theoreticaly cools faster
damascus barrels were twisted steel around a mandral while plyable, and can only hold minimal pressures (the older 1800's and prior used these) Usually identified by the use of paper shotgun shells at far lower pressures.
or finally,..a twisted barrel can be the one that goes bad on me during a match when I am running in the top 5. This barrel can be found "twisted" around the base of a tree adjacent to the firing line and may smell of urine[}:)][:D]

I think you may be referring to the gain twist rifled barrel that is used on some target black powder rifles. The theory behind it is roughly that the rifling will start at the origin at a twist rate of about "1:"48 and increase it's twist rate to something like a "1:"32. The idea being that you can get a heavy bullet to have the kind of centrifugal spin you really desire be getting it up to that speed gradually. If the rate is too quick to begin with, the fouling will be immediate and severe in the throat area. Just a guess at what you meant, but I hope it helped some.

Damascus barrels were made of twisted rods and steel strips welding bundle into a billet then twisting the billet while red hot around a steel mandrel and welding.this was known as a twist barrel some damascus were fakes and not made as well not welded or proofed this was done by some of the german makers.tks hedge 0 -

check for proof marks some damacus barrels are proofed higher and better than some. the belgian barrels were made up to 1930 for most american mfg.i shoot them using pyrodex, a black powder replacement.
i just got a 28 ga damacus double and it shoots fine.unknown guns and mfg.can be proof tested. i dont know of any proof houses in us.i use a ringing method which was taught to me by old gunsmith in texas in the 60's before we blued any doubles.tks hedge0 -
