M 12 Hydrocoil

There's a M 12 Hydrocoil for sale locally that has caught my eye, but I'm suspicious about it. 12 ga., 30" Simmons V/R barrel with no offset proof, obvious reblue, S/N dates it to 1958, and barrel stamped 3"!
My only source of Win M 12 info is the Blue Book, which states 1) hydrocoil stocks were available only in trap and skeet configurations, and 2) 3" chamber was available only on the Heavy Duck.
My question---- is this a factory gun? It can be bought for under $600. Bert, if you give me a straight answer, I'll quit needling you about M21's !

    Hello laxcoach...

    The Blue Book is out-to-lunch (again). Hydro-coil stocks were briefly offered form 1963 - 1965 on Skeet and Trap models, but they could also be special ordered on any other variation (e.g. Field grade, Heavy Duck Gun, etc.).

    My guess is that the gun you are looking at is nowhere near being factory original, and if by "under $600" you mean just under that figure, then no, it is not worth it. Now with that said, if the hydro-coil is still functioning properly, it is rare all by itself, and worth a few hundred $$. Most hydro-coil stocks failed quickly if the gun was shot much.

    No need to quit needling me about the greatest American SxS ever built... I most surely am not going to stop my derisive and denigrating comments about your favored "dainty" L.C. Smiths[}:)][:D]

    Bert, are you saying that the Hydrocoil was only offered '63- '65, or prior to those dates? BTW, it functions fine.

    I sold a 97% Hydro-coil stock set for $400 2 weeks ago. So it may well be worth the $600 if the rest of the gun is salvagable? Brown or Ivory colored stk? Ivory more $$. Wasn't aware the the US ever built a SXS other than an A.H Fox? LOL!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes, the Hydro-coil was not yet offered in 1958. Because it is functional, the gun is probably worth close to $600, but only as a parts gun.

    Forgot to add... I am currently on the road headed for the Big Reno Show, and will only be checking in on the forum late in the evening. I will be in Reno through Sunday morning.
