What's the best way to clean 30 year old cosmoline off a gun, withoout damaging it?

Warm it up tell your able to use a rag and oil to wipe it off. Thats how I do it, a hand held torch works great.

You can start by hanging the stock in the sun over a pan on a hot day or two. That will remove a lot of the cosmoline. Acetone will get the rest without raising the grain on the stock, but will dry the wood, which will need to be oiled.

There are probably hundreds of comments on this subject here.
Seach'em if you want, if not...use the mildest petrol/solvent you are considering and you will be fine. You will probably want to spend some time (therapy) with it anyway.
