Colt Official Police date....Pre, Post - War ????

How do you date a pre or post war Colt Official Police? Anybody know the serialization? And will the Colt Official Police MK III say MK III on the bbl?

  The pre-war official police will have a patent date on the barrel. These were made from 1927 to 46.
  
  The post war version will have no patent date on the barrel.

  The MK III will have MK III on the barrel. They were built on the J Frame instead of the older I Frame.
