Rem. 870 feeding problem

I just purchased a new Remington 870 super mag, and about 50% of the time it will not feed 3" shells. I have not tried 3 1/2" shells yet. With only limited testing 2 3/4" shells seem to feed ok. The carrier is not lifting the 3" shell high enough to align it with the barrel.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Im surprised Ive been hearing good things about the 870.

    Although ill admit I dont know jack about remingtons.

    I really hope someone has the answer for you.

    Id call the customer service number and tell them about the problem.

    I have a couple Rem 870's and have not experienced this problem.

    The Super Mag is supposed to handle 3 1/2" shells, so I dont know why it will not feed 3". Since it is a new gun, I would contact Remington and arrange to send it to the for warranty repairs. There may also be a warranty repair station in your neck of the woods that you can send it to.

    If nothing else, they can maybe give you some pointers on the phone.

    These feeding problems usually happenen when the gun is "short stroked" meaning that you do not bring the forearm all the way back when ejecting the fired shell. The supermags need to to be full stroked. Give it a try.

    I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

    Try Duckhunters advice, I have a Remington 870 express and it works without a hitch.
    Now, I have had problems with S&B shells hanging up in my Mossberg 835 at times, but I changed to federals and it works like a champ.

    The best advice is to have your gun serviced under the factory warranty, if it is still covered. Sadly, Remington quality has really slipped of late. My educated guess is that your shell carrier is slightly off center, and is periodically getting `hung up' on either the bottom edge of the barrel tang ( the part of the barrel that extends into the receiver) or also possibly getting hung up on the left or right slide action arm extension ( the metal rails that extend into the receiver from the forend assembly). One of the above 3 parts must be causing periodic interference within your action. The reason it doesn't happen every time is due to the inherent `slop or play' (left or right movement) in the shell carrier assembly itself. Shouldn't be too hard to zero in on the interfering part. Slowly, with the action EMPTY, work the action back and forth, and look down into the ejection port and see if you can determine what the shell carrier is hanging up on as the action is slowly closed. It should be fairly obvious to the eye, as long as you move the action forward (closed) very slowly.
    I'll wager the shell carrier is off-center and crowding the barrel tang side of receiver. Let us know what you find. By all means, if it is under factory warranty, take it to a local repair site.
