Winchester vs. Ruger - 270 WSM
I am looking to buy a NEW 270 WSM rifle, but i can't decide on which company to go with. I think i have it narrowed down the the Ruger MKII and the Winchester Model 70, Sportsman. Money is not an object, as far as these two go. Which brand do you guys perfer? Which brand performs better?, Thx

Ruger will be $100 cheaper if not more and it also comes with the rings. Your Win 70 will need bases and mounts so add atleast another $30-50 to your costs. If money was no object then I would buy the Winchester by a slight edge. 0 -

This is a question I pondered myself last week. I JUST set up my NEW model 70 classic featherweight (6.5X55 Swede). New VX2 3-9 with weaver mounts. I have 2 other mdl 70s and a mdl 77 Ruger. The 77 is about $100 cheaper, but the winchester is the ultimate in my opinion.
I love my Ruger, but the winchester is nicer. The Ruger is a plainer rifle, nice smooth action and very good shooter. The Ruger is one I take no matter the weather. It is a little more "used" than the others though. Pick them up and handle them a little, see which one YOU like and good luck.0 -
The intregal bases of the Ruger are not to be taken lightly. The Ruger design has one less feature to get loose and cause problems. What I can't get past with most of the Rugers is the stock design, it just doesn't fit me. Personally if I was to go the Winchester route again I go with the featherweight. I guess I'd be making your decision partly on weather the rifle was going to be a show piece or a work horse. Still if either shouldered/fit me better that would be a major factor. 0 -
I have a Winchester, Laminated Stock, 24 inch barrel rifle in 270 WSM. It is shooting 0.8 inch groups at 100 yards regularly, with 140 gr. bullets at 3100 fps.
I have never seen or heard of a Ruger barrelled rifle that shoots that well right out of the box.
I realize that the Winchester is more expensive.

my ruger M77 MKII will do better than that .8"group in 30-06 from a 22" barrel,..but it may be the exception rather than the rule.
the ruger M77 needs to be torqued correctly in it's stock first of all. The action is quite smooth for the price, and it is "lost mold" casted which according to my gunsmith is the only correct way to do a casting. The flaw they had in the past was due to outsourced barrels made by cheap means on junk equipment. They now hammer forge their barrels in house, and these barrels are much improved. Mine has been GREAT.
as for which of the two is better, feel each rifle for stock fit and proper cheek weld, and choose accordingly. Either will be more than accurate enough for hunting work.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
