Hazmat shipping question

I would assume the answer is "no" but can you ship powders and primers under one hazmat shipment? I want to order some of the PMC berdan primers from Grafs but don't want to buy 5000 to make it worth the hazmat fee; but I would like to get perhaps 2000 and a few cans of powder.

    Q: What is your hazardous material fee?

    A: A hazardous materials fee (haz mat fee) of $20 is charged to any ground order containing powder, primers, fuse or gun cleaning liquids over 1 quart. This fee is per package with a max gross weight of 70 lbs/package. Smokeless powder and primers can be combined (up to 50 lbs) under 1 haz mat fee. Black powder requires a separate fee and cannot be combined with any other hazardous materials.

    rule of thumb on hazmat is 2 items that complete the chain of events that lead to a reaction cant be shipped together. i/e: matches and gas. gun powder and primers...etc... seperate them and then consult the hazmat regulations book that tells exactly how the box must be packed, contructed, and, marked.

    The question is; "...can you ship powders and primers under one hazmat shipment?"

    The answer is yes, they can be combined for One HazMat fee but possibly shipped in two separate boxes or special packaging, thus avoiding the double HazMat fee. ?Entiende?

    "FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE", Last order I got from Widener's. Powder and Primers were shipped to ME in ONE box. Only ONE $20 HasMat fee was charged.

    Small arms primers are classed by DOT as a Division 1.4S explosive and smokeless powder is classed as a Division 4.1 flammable solid. The two material are considered compatable for shipping purposes by the Department of Transportation. They must be packaged, marked, and labeled seperately, but may be shipped in the same overpack.

    former air operations officer SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 2. former navy skeet team, former navy rifle/pistol team member. co-owner skeetmaster tubes inc.. owner/operator professional shooting instruction. NRA certified instructor.

    Sorry, but 49CFR, 177.848, says that division 1.4 explosive (the primers) and division 4.1 flammable solids (the smokeless powder) are compatable and can be shipped with no segregation requirements. Each must be in a package that is marked and labeled properly. Both can be shipped together or both packages may be placed in the same outer package to make an overpack.

    I have been a certified hazmat shipper for over 20 years and have to be recertified every 3 years (2 years for air shipments). I am currently certified for hazardous materials, radioactive materials, explosives, hazardous wastes, mixed wastes, and air shipments under IATA/ICAO regulations.

    You're absolutely correct. I've seen everything from strict compliance with hazmat regulations, to overinterpretation to the point of paranoia, to "What's 49CFR?".

    your regs state that it must be seperated. thats the point im making fellow hazmat man. as i stated earlier, it must be PACKED and seperated 'properly.' the way the question was put was, can i throw it all in one box and send it off. in that case, the law of physics is stronger than the law of the land. thats like saying its ok to ship dynamite wired to its igniter and say...'but i didnt charge it.'[:0]
