Derringers ?????
Anybody got any feedback on the Cobra 9mm Derringer?? Have been considering getting a derringer to carry while I walk, I recently had some rods put in my back and have to walk 2 miles a day. Also what are decent MFG's of derringers, I know Davis and Jennings are suppossed to be crud . Whats your input?? Thanks.

I've heard good reviews of these http://www.amderringer.com/m1.html from people who like the novelty of it. In other words, they don't care how well it shoots. I think for the price you can probably get something a little better suited to personal defense, which is what it sounds like you are looking for. Plus, I've never seen a derringer in any of the larger calibers that are wheel guns - double barrel only. So, you only get 2 shots before you need to reload (or run away :-D). Beretta makes some decent pocket pistols IMHO, or check out some of the new hamerless revolvers, and you'll get at least a few more tries on the bad guy. I'm not looking for personal defense completely, just something small for when I am walking . I have Glock 40's, S&W 357 , on and on. I was looking for something that would fit in my sweat pants pocket but still meet Texas CHL standards. All of my other handguns are to big to carry on my walks, wearing sweats, shorts and light t-shirt doesnt give much room for concealment. A 2 shot derringer is what I was considering, any other time I would be carrying something more lethal. 0 -
I had a Davis automatic & I would not recomend it. The Davis two shot derringer is another matter however. I have had one in .32 auto for a long time & it has never failed to funtion. It's certainly not
a first choise but it does what it is designed to do & does so reliably. The only problem is that the extractor always overrides the rims of fired cartridges. Reloading in a hurry would be a problem if you didn't have something to get the cases out but that is not really the function of such a weapon.0 -
Look into a kel tec just as small as and even lighter than most derringers, and will not leave you with two shots
I have a nice little derringer collection from .22 to .357magnum, I would not consider carrying one, at the range they are capable of I could do just as well with a knife, at ten yards I would be lucky to get a six foot group, in my opinion most derringers are only effective if you are literally touching them with the gun, unless you want to spend 400 bucks on a bond arms, but you might as well be carrying a full sized gun

I don't know what the Texas CHL standards are, but I would receommend a NAA .22 Mag mini revolver if that is acceptable. An extension grip is available that gives a reasonable stable sight picture.

It makes a lot of sense to carry a derringer. No other gun is so small. The bad guys see you in your walking shorts, and will assume that you are unarmed. If the derringer is not accurate past 10 feet, so what? Wait until he is 5 feet away and give him a nasty surprise.
The best derringer is no longer made. It is the High Standard, made in .22lr and .22mag. No safety or external hammer, just a stiff trigger pull. Very well made and very reliable. If you look around you can find one. Once or twice a year one pops up in the little "Trader" newspaper here in Asheville.
I have one in .22 mag and I carry it when my buddies drag me to a Braves game in downtown Atlanta. I slip it into my pocket and nobody knows I am packing.
If 5 guys came up to beat me up and rob me, I would feel confident. When the closest guy gets a .22mag in the chest, 95 percent chance I won't even need the second barrel because the other 4 guys will be running so fast.0 -
I have carried the High Standard 22 mag derringer for a long time. The toughest thing is remembering to rotate the ammo carried every year. It has been very reliable. I have the nickle plated model.

I concur with the Hi-Standard .22 mag recommendation. Even if you don't hit the perp, the tremendous blast & foot-long muzzle flash will keep him from waiting to see if you have another shot left. They used to make a wallet holster for it, but I've tried for a couple of years to find one without success. Any idea where to find one? (I don't mean the "shoot-through" one with the hole for your finger, as they are no longer legal.)
The problem with the Cobra, although well made, is that it is too expensive, too big, & too heavy for its purpose.

Not sure if they have one for the exact gun you are talking about, but I've seen derringer holsters on there. Look for on of the "convertible" holsters, as it can be converted from rear pocket to front pocket by removing the large leather panel that makes it print like a wallet.0 -
.380 AMT back up. 6 rounds, thinner than a CF derringer, quite tidy and I've seen them $150 used.
Not a gun that gets to the range much so probably used means used little."No taxation without representation"0
