SKS, Which one?

i am planning to get a SKS rifle for deer hunting but i'm not real sure which one to get. so i was wondering on which SKS rifle would you guys recommend. i heard that the Russian SKS was the best one, but i'm not real sure. so any comments on this would be helpful.

    The best deal I've seen lately has been on the Yugoslav Model 59/66's.
    Guy had one at the range, it looked unissued. He got it for $150 from J & G.

    If you have your heart set on a Russian, it will likely cost you substiantially more as they havn't been imported in years. Prices I've seen on even a refurbed Russian have been well over $200.

    Make sure you can hunt with a semi auto in your state before using one.

    The biggest problem I have had with the SKS is the 15 pound trigger pulls. No matter how nice of a one you see, check that out before you buy, or be ready to pay for a trigger job! It is a Russian diesign but the Chinese made the most of them. All are about the same. Good luck.

    I have a Chinese Norinco SKS and I would definitely reccomend it. I boguht it new for $99 about 8 years ago and it has never failed to fire or function. I put a Ramline synthetic stock and a scope on it. The triggers on them are very heavy with alot of creep. I saw the new Yugoslav models still in the arsenal paper at a local show for $119. I highly reccomend the Ramline synthetic stock for $50. Try the 154 gr. softpoints for whitetails. The hollowpoints do not expand on deer in my experiences.

    My 2. I have a Norinco with all the gadgets (scope, folding stock, extra detach mags,etc)I got for $200. It was still greasy from cosmo.
    The gun shoots great (though accuracy is not up to my standard) It is a good plinker and accuracy for hunting should be sufficient.

    The main difference between the Russian and the others is that the Russian is milled, while the others are stamped.

    Norinco. I have one and it's as reliable as the day is long. No misfeeds, no malfunctions, and pretty cheap.

    If you want a super high quality gun and do not mind the price, get a russian SKS. The one I bought was made in 1954 and had obvious signs of storage grease and the wood had minor nicks but no scratches or cracks. After I swabed out the bore It was very clean, all lands and grooves were visible and looked liked it had not even been fired. I paid $425 for my SKS and it was well worth it. If price is a concern I recommend A yugo model, you will have good results.

    the russian sks is kinda pricey so i'm gonna wait to see if i can get it for a better price at the gun show this weekend. and also what's the difference between milled and stamped?

    To the best of my knowledge milled is where they take a solid block of metal and grind and forge out the required shape; while a stamped reveiever is just put it under a press and "stamp" out the shape. Naturally a milled receiever is of higher quality, but since you say price is a concern you can go with the yugo with good results. Although I think the yogo is a stamped receiever (dont hold me to this) you should still have good performance.



    The yugo model from JG sales in arizona will cost you in the low to mid $200's. Eventhough I just went to the JG website(and saw $149.99 for yugo sks), still expect to pay around $200. I suggest you pick up a shotgun news and look at the full page ads JG sales puts out. If they offer hand select I say take it, you will be happy you did.
