Looking for a new pistol...need advice
I'm in the market for a new carry automatic. Here are my criteria:
Action: I want a DA with a decocker, because I like the idea of being able to carry safely with the hammer down, then simply draw and fire in a crisis. However, I don't want a DAO, because I'm concerned that in a high-stress crisis situation where I might not be mindful of proper trigger technique and simply end up yanking on the trigger, EVERY shot being DA might damage my accuracy. I can tolerate the safety idea of the first shot being DA, but I can't understand DAA...I mean, since you're already in a crisis and have fired your first shot, isn't that the point at which redundant restrictions on your trigger pull are only going to get in your way?
Size: I want a compact model, since I don't much care for carrying large automatics concealed for any stretch of time.
Caliber: I want something in .40S&W, since it's the caliber I feel most comfortable with and am most confident in my abilities with.
Price: I don't have a grand to toss down on a new handgun right now. I need something that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

Well I was going to suggest a CZ, but I looked and their compact is only in 9mm with a decocker.
Spend a little extra and be happy with a SIG

Steyrman, time to become Sigman-
Dano1 is correct-buy a Sig 239 in .40 then buy a barrel and couple of mags in .357 Sig.
Voila-you have a traditional DAO semi-auto, two potent defensive rounds, and superb Sig quality. Look at GB and GA.com-they're out there.

Why not go with your namesake and get a Steyr S40 compact. The don't have the decocker feature, but the safety is above the trigger. All you have to do is push up on it and you're ready to go. I have one and it's a great little gun.

I agree with John419, check out the SIG great guns and you can pick up a used Sig 239 at www.kyimports.com for $340.00. My dad bought a 226 from them and it had a little holster wear, but it shoots fine. The Sig 239 would be compact, accurate and has a decocker.

Semi auto for self defense... I woud never recommend one for that reason. 1st is nothing any faster than a revolver for getting off the first shot. In your crisis situation, what you are faced with is a desperate person that already has his weapon drawn, While you are fumbling with the saftey he is going to kill you. I keep hearing "but a semi auto has more shots. This is true, But if you ain't stoped them with 5, you are already dead. But if you have to have a semi-auto .... buy a glock or one of its copycats. Any firearm with a safety/decocker, hrs upon hrs of practice is required to even come close to being proficient enough to use it for a self-defense weapon. 80-90% of these people buying semi-autos for this purpose have probably not fired a box of ammo thru the weapon and half of them never cleaned it afterwards.
Anyway that is my gut feeling on the matter.0 -

i am all about semi auto pistols i own a glock 21 and a 1911 45
but i will have to agree with that one guy with the revolver
quicker on the draw and getting the first shot off just doesnt look as cool but we are talking about carrying concealed and getting off the first shot right?
