shooting 45 Schofield in a 45 "Long Colt"

I don't want to carry two types of 45 ammo and I want my second gun to be schofield so...ANy disadvantages?? (a beginner)

    Hello This would be like shooting a 38 special in a 357 mag no problem The 1870's army had a cartridge the 45 GOV. so that both the colt and S & W could use the same ammo "big trouble if you had 45 LC ammo and S&W pistol." you might need to clean the cyl of the colt after shooting the shorter case if you want to shoot the colt ammo in it.

    Just like Perry Shooter says.

    The 45 Schofield will fit into the 45 LC chambers but the 45LC is too long to fit the Scofield chambers.

    Lowest common denominator, if carrying both guns together make sure you have the Schofield ammo because it can be fired from either pistol. If you only have 45LC ammo, leave the Schofield at home.

    You might be reloading for the two 45 cartridges but that isn't necessarily bad.

    Both the above answers are spot on. There was a time in the 1870s when the government arsenals produced just the Schofield round, although both the Schofield and Colt SAA .45 LC were both being used in the field, for the simple reason it made the logistics easier.

    Most of the current repro Schofields are chambered in .45 Colt, so there should be no problem at all.

    It is a darn shame S&W didn't get with the program on the short action versus the long.I have a second issue Schofield,A 44-40 S&W Frontier and a 38-44 Target.Both of the latter have the long frames and the difference is not noticable to the shooter.I wonder since S&W had the first Military cartridge handguns, they thought that they could persuade the military to use theirs only.Whatever it was it turned out poorly for all concerned as the Schofield was and is a much better Calvary sidearm.Love them both and have them both.I like the feel of the Colt better, but in a fire fight when reloading is needed, keep that Colt away from me..A guy could get killed reloading..modoc

    Bill, if you read the accounts of the time, it was largely a matter of personal choice. Some preferred the flexibility of only refreshing less than a full cylinder, some preferred the speed of the Schofield, even though they might waste some ammo they would need later.
