223 WSSM
How many of you have a 223 WSSM - what brand and what do you think of this caliber. What brand and grain ammo do you normally shoot? Do you think this caliber will be popular ten years from now? Thinking of getting one and trying to get some feedback.

I think it will go the way of the .219 Zipper and all those old cartridges. In the day I'm sure there was a big deal over all these rounds but they faded out over time. If you want a good varmint caliber that will be around ten years from now buy a .22-250. 0 -
Badly overbore round. -- Look in a copy of the Hornady Sixth Edition Reloading Manual and read the forward print page before you buy one. They say that while working up reloading data for this round that signs of excessive pressure came on suddenly and unexpectedly, and that after examining their test barrel with a Borescope they showed excessive throat wear after only 350 rounds of ammo, and clearly state that this round is hard on barrels.-- Food for thought.-- Good Luck what ever you decide to do.......... 0 -
the 223wssm seems to me to be a reincarnation of the 220swift (one of my favorites) The velocities from similar barrels and similar pills seem to be quite close. The main reason I don't see the WSSM as an option is because the action is an oddball size. That being said, when the barrel needs to be replaced, you are pretty limited to what chambering you can choose.
I think the 22-250 and the 220swift are all you need in the 22cal long distance chamberings.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

The old adage "speed kills" is very appropo when it comes to bullets. Still there are some practical limitations. The one I'm thinking about here is that light bullets shed their energy faster then heavy one. The 22-250 & 220swift get some lighter slugs up into the 4000fps area, but they are of limited use at longer range because of how fast they shed energy. Thus folks look to heavy for caliber bullets for longer range shooting. But even a 60g or 70g 22 cal bullet aren't great for really getting out there and thus folks are steping up to the 6mm's for longer varmint shots. I don't know, but I suspect that the 223WSSM can't really do anything enough better then the 22-250 & the 220swift with the extra couple hundred feet per second, in 22cal, because it is beyound the practical upper limits. There are several 22 wildcats based on the .308 case that have never taken off because of this. The 6mmWSSM may be another matter.... 0 -
I have had a 223WSSM in a Winchester model 70 feather weight and it's a beautiful looking rifle. I shot some 55gr. and 63gr. factory ammo and groups would average from 1 1/2 inch to 3 inch, I reload most all my ammo and after I started reloading I was able to get 3/4 inch if the barrel was cool.I called Hornady after I received there newest manual about the throat erosion they mentioned, I was told it was around two inchs, they told me winchester chromes their barrels and should be good for around two thousand rounds.After 450 rounds the barrel doesn't show any signs erosion.
How ever if I were to get another rifle in 223WSSM I would have a heavier barrel, I fired a string of ten rounds once and the barrel gets HOT! Bottom line I still like my 243Win. best.0
