3006 Hornady bullets
Which bullet would you use if you were on an Orxy hunt?The 165 grain btsp or the Inter Bond 165 grain Hornady bullet.

If those were my only two choices, I would go with the Interbond. They are designed to hold together better. I think an oryx is similar in size and toughness to an elk and expect they would need a tough bullet.

So what would be your first choice, of any bullet? This is a once in a life time hunt. I'm just going on whats worked best for me on deer in the past, like ten years ago.

victorlvlb, I have never hunted in Africa at all but If what you are going to hunt is elk size I believe I would go with the 180 grain bullet weight. A little better in range and also hits harder. I would give a good look at the Barnes 180 grain TripleShock X bullet, or the Nosler 180 grain Partition. Both are excellent bullets that give top notch accuracy and hold together also. Hornady's 180 interbond would also fill your needs. All are expensive but this hunt will not be cheap and this is not the time to economize on the bullet. I'd also recommend a lot of shooting practice before going on the hunt but use the same weight bullets at the approximate velocity that you will take on the hunt. Use the cheap bullets to practice. I would do my practice shooting using field methods and stay away from bench type shooting. use of shooting sticks are fine for practice if you are going to take them on the hunt. Have fun, jim 0 -

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

They imported Orxy to New Mexico more then a ten years ago. It seems they are getting out of hand.The ones on the military base are giving the G.I.'s fits. If I gave a wrong impression on where I would be hunting I am sorry. I did't want to sound like a rich man, cause I'm not.My rifle is a 30-06, it does real good with 165 grain spitzer point boat tail bullets. I figure most of the shots taken on these animals will be under 75 yards. I've got until September to work up a reload. I'm thinking of using a Nosler partition bullet. If a 180 grain bullet is better then thats what I will use. Its a once in a life time hunt, I don't want to blow it.Thank you all.

Either one would work well, just practice shooting. I also recommend the Nosler ballistic tip. Both are about the same style of construction so I would go with which one shot better and performed better at whatever range you might encounter them. -Good luck and hats off to you on your expedition.

Victor, my 30/06 prefers 180 grain spitzer boat tails, if yours is partial to 165 grain bullets go with that, as for brand I can recommend the Nosler Accubond it worked very well last fall on an enormous bull elk for me, also take a look at the Barnes X or Triple shock bullets, they will stay together no matter what. More than anything go with something that shoots well and that you have faith in. Oryx are not quite as large as full grown elk, but I hear they are fairly tough, with that said there is not an Oryx on the planet that will take a well placed hit from a 30/06 and go far. Just as important as bullet type is bullet placement, a broadside shoulder/spine shot or a poke through the lungs and he won't go far.[:D] 0 -
Go with what ever bullet that shoots the best out of your gun. At that range just about anything out of a 3006 other than maybe a fmj will put an orxy down. 0
