bullet deflection and steel plate
we have a gun range and if you didnt want a bullet to go thru the cinder block walls on the sides, what is the minimum steel plate thickness youd want to keep a 45 from puncturing from a deflected shot?[?]

What is the distance? If you are talkin 25 yards and a 45 ACP I'm guessing .5" of mild steel is adequate, but I'm willing to listen to others.[:D] 0 -
I just re-read your question, sorry I answered in haste. You are talking about stopping a bullet after deflection, now I'm on the same page, if you mount it to the cinder or concrete blocks with no space between .125" would be adequate, if you have more in the budget after pricing this thickness steel you could move up to .25" but that would be borderline overkill ( or bullet proof as some would say! ).

WOW this question opens a real bag of worms I would think the type of steel would change on how thick would be safe. We had an indoor range 50 Ft when we built a new 25 yard range we bought all target carriers back stop etc second hand. The cinder block side walls started to get shot up. Our problem is the 4 local police departments train gratis on our range so we took the ammor plate 1/4 inch steel from the old range and stood it on end along the side walls of our range this has held up very well but it is high grade steel and the angle is less then 45 degrees I suggest you check with the range design people at N.R.A. 0 -
.250" plate with backing or .375" freestanding plate will stop most .45 ammo without much deformation of the plate. .500" plate will stop most 7.62x39 rounds. We test this sort of crap when going out shooting, don't know why, we just do[:p]
