*** USP 40 Problem Need Help!!!! ***
This is my first USP. It is the full sized model. Purchased the gun used and have no clue how many rounds were fired throught it. My first firing of the gun was pretty bad. I fired 1 round through it fine and then on the 2nd the magazine droped out of the bottom. I reinserted the mag and then fired the 3rd round and it droped out again. I do not have a HK dealer or hk gunsmith anywhere within 2 hours of my home and would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what was needed to fix it. I only have one mag for the gun right now and a second new mag on its way. I don't know if it is the mag or the magazine release. Any help would be great.

Never had this happen to my USP45 even with 10K rounds through it.
I would try that 2nd mag when it arrives and see what happens.
Are they Factory HK mags?
Worst come to worst send it back into HK to have it checked out since it is a used gun. No telling what kind of abuse it has gone through. If you do send it to HK, kiss it good bye for 6 to 8 weeks.0 -

Yes the one that came with the gun was a factory HK mag. The one that I ordered is a New factory HK Mag as well. Just wondered if this has happend to anyone else. Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens when I get the new mag0 -
are you absolutely certain you are seating the mag properly? im not trying to insult your intelligence but ive had some guns that you had to slap pretty hard to get the mag in there. 0 -

Positive! No insult taken. I find it quite odd myself. It's in it's fine. When I pull on it or try to pry it free no movement. But when I fired it just droped out like I hit the magazine release.0 -
Perhaps the mag release spring or the catch is worn? I'd take a light and see if there is a visible problem in the mag well. 0 -
Insert the mag, then try to pull it out without touching the release. If it comes out, examine the catch inside the grip. Make sure it is not broken off. While examining it, manipulate the magazine release to assure that its being protruded properly. It could be your magazine catch or the spring. Either way, I would probably order replacements from numrich or other supplier. If you don't feel comfortable, it may be worth while to send it to HK-USA and have the entire weapon overhauled. 0 -

When I have the mag in and try to pull it out it seems to be engaged properly on the catch. I looked at the catch and everything seems fine. I think it may be the mag. Because of it being plastic I figure it may get worn easily. I don't have my other new mag yet to compare to see if it is worn at all. If it still doesn't work with the new mag I feel that it may be the spring. Does anyone know a website that sell replacement HK part?

I had the same problem but with a Springfield 1911. I changed my grips to a set of Herretts and 2 of my 4 magazines started dropping out, both were Colt mags. I was going nuts until I realized it started when I changed the grips. I loosened the screws a bit and the problem went away. I'm not familiar with your gun but give those grip screws a try. If their too tight they may be flexing something in the frame. 0 -
This is tough. I'm inclined to think that you are inadvertently hitting the magazine release, but I will take your word. (You can test this by letting someone else shoot the gun.)
Since the magazine is tight when you pull on it, it appears to be seating properly.
What happens when you cycle the slide by hand? Load the magazine with some snap caps. Cycle the slide by hand to chamber the snap cap. Cycle the slide again. Does the magazine stay in place? If it does, I doubt that it is the magazine or the release. (If you don't have any snap caps, you can use live rounds; but be careful.)

Ok, I got the gun out again today and I first cycled a mag of five live rounds by hand. Everything seemed fine and I was checking for any type of catch on the round or magazine by the slide. I also looked for movement in the bottom of the magazine, which I did notice some movement but not much. I then fired a few rounds through the gun. I got the same problem as last night. I know I am not hitting the release because I hold my middle finger tight against the bottom of it. The top portion of the magazine does seem to have some movement under recoil which I couldn't replicate by hand cycling the rounds. My new mag should be here tomorrow (Friday) and I will fire the gun again to see if problem persists. I have my eye on another HK USP and prob will purchase it because it has the LH safety and decocker (which my current one does not) and seems in better condition. I want to sell this current problematic pistol I have but don't want to sell and unsafe gun, so I sent an email to HK to see about having the gun shipped away for service. Does anyone know the cost of a major overhaul from HK?0 -
I hope the new magazine solves the problem.
Since handguns have to be shipped overnight, you will spend about $35 each way to send it to HK, plus whatever the repair costs. The only good thing about your problem is that HK should have no difficulty replicating it. Given the shipping costs, I'd try to find a local gunsmith to look at it.0 -
I know you said you were positive you did not hit the mag release. But due to the way the HK mag release functions (straight down versus push in) it is much easier to inadvertntly release it. I would try to have someone else shoot the gun. The mag release does not have to travel a whole lot to release the mag. And tightening your middle finger may make it that much easier for the mag release to get a good grip on your finger. Factor in recoil and muzzle rise, and that may be what is dropping your mag. Get some dummy rounds (NOT LIVE AMMO) or just hold down the slide release. Assume a proper fireing grip, and have a 2nd person work the slide with some force. See if that person working the slide is enough to get your hand to release the magazine. 0
