what does the R stand for on the
Savage 99R chambered in .300

  My reference notes that it dates to the mid 1930's and it denotes rifles with a pistol-grip that was checkered as well as a checkered forend.

  The 99 was produced over a long period of time with several changes along the way. These changes were called Models by Savage and given letter designations, though the letters do not appear on the rifles. The 99R was called the heavy rifle and introduced in 1932. It remained in production until 1960, so many of the rifles seen today are 99R's. The .300 Savage was produced throughout the production run. It is superior to the .30-30. The buttstock on this model is larger than on other models, thus the name "heavy rifle." The forend is not schnabled as on many other models of the 99. Barrels were 22" and 24". Serial numbers run from approx. 340,000 to 1,060,000.
