I stand corrected although maybe firearm manufacturers should stop putting 223/5.56 on barrels unless they are designed to take the high pressures

if you guys just go to a search engine and type in 223 vs 5.56
you will find lots to read about it
i posted the topic becasue i hear guys arguing allthe time about it
but just like i use to be for years i thought they were the same in deed they are not ,, the cardinal rule we were taught on the marines were.......you can shhot 223 ammo in rifle chambered for 5.56
and do not shhot 5.56 ammo through a rifle chambered for 223
there ya go

but what if the barrel says .223/5.56 and if that is the case is there any difference in 308 and 7.62 nato aka 7.62x51?

Why yes there is. Don't shoot 7.62x51 NATO throught a rifle marked 308 win. You may shoot either through a NATO marked rifle but only 308 through a 308 marked rifle.

pretty much the same comparison. vis 5.56 vs 223
pretty much the same thing the 7.62x51 has a higher pressure chambered round and thicker case
if you read forums you can see for your self that once again
you can shoot a 308 in a 7.62x51 chambered weapon
but they advise you not toshhot 762/51 ammo in a 308 chambered weapon
so once again this is another myth that 7.62x51 and winchester 308 are the same........in deed they are not

buy a 5.56 over a 223
and by a 7.62x51 over a 308
that way you can always use both rounds 308 and 7.62x51 in a weapon built for 7.62x51
and the same for 5.56 weapons........you have the luxry of using both 5.56 and 223 in a 5.56 chambered weapon
i get in arguments with local gun dealers all the time
it has been put into there heads when they were young that they were the same.....but in allreality they are not

well ive been using 7.62 nato in my Century Arms sporter and i havent had any problems and if that is the case then they should stop selling 7.62 nato claiming its 308

So Parafrog,
Do you like hi points? Ever hunted deer with a 22lr?

parafrog, Perhaps the gun dealers think .223 Remington and 5.56mm are the same because the book, Cartridges of the World says they are the same. Exactly what are the pressure differences that would make it unwise to shoot a 5.56 round in a .223 rifle? Are you saying the AR 15 chambered for .223 and the M16 chambered for the 5.56mm have different chambers? I am aware that the 7.62 NATO military brass is thicker, therefore has less powder capacity than the .308 but that is a concern to those loading the cartridges. This argument comes up from time to time but it is my opinion that the differences in the cartridges have no practical application. For practical purposes, the 5.56mm and the .223 Rem are interchangeable.
Note--This was written before Flying Clay Disc's explanation was posted above. That explains it. I still think there is no great danger or we would have heard of problems caused by shooting 5.56 military rounds in .223 Rem. rifles.0 -
