Anybody speak NYS legalese?

Just got back from my FFL after taking possession of a SA 1903 Mk.1. He had his NYS penal code book out to clarify what can and can't be owned in NYS in the assault rifle category. Then he got to a paragraph that said that ownership of 20 or more "firearms" is a class 4 felony. Lucky I went back to the NYS definition of firearm, which is basically pistols, sawed off shotguns, rifles w/ bbl length under 16" and legal barrel length shotguns under 26" OA. Most of this stuff is illegal anyhow with the exception of pistols which must be under permit.

What the heck is this law stating anyhow? Why do these jerky freeloading legislators need to redefine terms such as firearm which was pretty well defined before they stuck their noses into it?

    For legal interpretation, I suggest that you write to the State Attorney General. Trust me, none of us on this forum can give you legal advice that is worth a hoot.

    I would suggest that that means if you own 20 of those firearms by thier definition then that would be illegal but personally i think you have nothing to worry about. I would also suggest that that law is to protect against gunrunners.

    Thank you, and Nmyers. Nys was a great state if you go back before all the legislators (lawyers) starting sticking their fingers in the communal pie. Lakes, game, four seasons. Had it all. I should have seen the writing on the wall when Cu(H)omo was ousted and quoted as saying "what about my sheep" meaning all of NY citizens, including the ones who despised him.

    I have yet to get my pistol permit and have been focusing on long guns for 40 years. What I read today suggests that one cannot possess (own) over 20 handguns despite whether or not they are legally registered to a pistol permit.

    I get very suspiscious when something with as much potential to influence me is written in such an ambiguous manner. Suspiscious that those we pay to "protect" us have alterior motives and do so in order to establish a gray area that can be enforced selectively, against a large number of law abiding people.

    I also had an SKS that I had replaced the stock with a folder and bought some duckbill mags before the AWB. Looks like it is illegal now although it was legal back then. Maybe I'm lucky that I needed money and sold it one Christmas but now I'm wishing I'd kept it.

    We are dealers in NYS and I have never heard of a law that syas you can not own over 20 handguns.

    The reason for all the legal language is simple....they don't want you to understand....they will "tell" you what you need to know. Gun control laws are not and never were about firearms....they ar about controlling you and your rights...or more aptly....taking your rights.

    3. Firearm does not include an antique firearm.

    An admission that they redefined the term and confused the issue

    Well, I found out that you can't go to a NYS sponsored website and search the law with the best of search engines (a search for "possession twenty firearms" yielded all kinds of legalese about being 21 years old to drink. I'll find the rest if I have to get a copy of NYS penal code and copy it on my scanner.

    The bad news for New Yorkers according to the definition of firearm...

    I did read where possession of 20 "firearms" was a class 4 felony.

    The Good News:

    I don't own any firearms according to NYS law.

    0 down, 19 15/16th to go.

    Get your NYS penal code out and read it. Class 4 felony to possess 20 "firearms."

    most people forget that nyc is just a city in new work state. most treat it as if its a state all by itself and it is despised by most new yorkers who live 'in the woods,' since most of the states taxes go south to deal with nyc problems. the laws were indeed designed to allow the nyc justice system to combat mafia and gang related problems. remember, its one of the reasons al capone lived and did business in n.j.. the misfortune is that many of the laws stuck it to the upstaters. thus, new yorks beauty will never enjoy me or my guns as a citizen, though i visit it routinely, being the former conn yankee that i am. i'll stick to va.. 'we kill our criminals' down here![;)]

    They bought up Creedmoor and are all fornicating there. I worked in Long Island a while back and a lot of women there were going with other women, not full blown, just nothing better to do. They're all liberal as hell, too. Wanted free medical for everyone. Now the union where I work upstate wants to tell Pataki not to cut giveaways to hospitals. Hell, it all has to stop somewhere.

    My complaint is this; The law is for people who don't have a law library as well (and perhaps more so) as those who do. These laws are intentionally written ambiguously, with words like "firearm" even redefined.

    We have a "justice" system that refuses to enact legislation that will discourage frivolous lawsuits, that enacts laws that their subsidiaries cannot enforce and that will not negate archaic laws (when was the last time you heard that a switchblade or gravity knife caused a problem?).

    I worked in a large manufacturing plant that had been established a century before my time. There I met a young guy who paid his dues on the line and wound up actually creating a position for himself that hadn't existed before him.

    This is exactly what the bloodsucking government has done. When first enacted, tax laws only required a dollar a year from a $4000 earner. Forget about factoring in inflation, just do the math. This whole ilk that exists now for our "betterment" (in solely their own and the opinions of the brain dead) is nothing more than a self fulfilling cancer on our society that, occasionally may do something for the common good.

    In my 50 years I have met enough trustworthy lawyers to be able to count them on the finger of one hand. They lobbied for the right to advertise like the ambulance chasers they are on television but God forbid someone actually present a proposition to actually discourage frivolous lawsuits (such as those filed by felons who have exhausted their appeals banning electric toothbrushes). Although such legislation would, indeed, be for the betterment of our SOCIETY it would be to the detrement of those who have "earned" their position as a legal "professional." Perhaps that last word should not be in quotation marks, they are as professional as those pursuing the world's oldest "profession."

    These are the people who write the laws, and with only a minimum of consideration for the masses who constitute the tax base they represent. These are lawyers, people (if you can call them that) who exist for their own fulfillment, represent themselves as those who have our best interests at heart and insidiously pass laws to further encumber us behind their closed (at least masked in a flood of legal jargon) doors.

    If any aspect of our Constitution needs to be ammended, it is the aspect that enabled this giant cancer to burgeon to its present mass. Don't be so confident that living where you live places you beyond their grasp, either. I'm sure you have legislators, when they actually show up for work, rising to a point of order as concerns taking money from another state who truly needs funds allocated for a specific purpose. In point of fact, no one there ever suggests returning money (or rights) to the taxpayer. Just look at what happened to SSI funds. Show them a dollar, they want to spend it and get $0.25 worth to show for it.

    My point is that it sucks to pay taxes without representation. Heard that before?

    i grew up in conn.
    left when i was 17.
    everything east of virignia is blue state. wow. i never realized how polluted the east was until i became politically educated. im glad to be in va now. no going back. conn, once the largest gun mfg'ing state, wont even allow you to own what they make for everyone else. crazy world. new york, even worse!
