Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycles

I have my grandmother's revolver, just wondering if anyone can help me with the date of manufacture, and if it can still be fired. It has Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycles, Fitchburg, Mass. on top of the barrel. It looks like a .32, and has a top break frame. A patent date of Aug. 30 89 (I think, not clear). Taking off the left side grip, there is a serial number starting with "Q".

  sounds like a ij safety hammer to me. turn of the century. you have to be careful which 32 cal bullet you use. 32 s&w i believe it to be. is it 5 or 6 shot?

  It's a five shot, and it has an exposed hammer. I think the Q in front of the serial number might put it into the smokeless powder years.

  the Q letter code was only use one time on the large frame, 38 caliber, second model, safety automatic hammer revolver. the year was 1906, there were approx 100,000 manufactured that year. the second model safety automatic revolver (1896-1908)was manufactured for black powder cartriidge pressures only and are not safe with modern ammo. in 1906 when the Q letter code was used the actual patent date markings on the bottom of the butt were in two lines and read top line; *PAT'D.JUNE 16.96.AUG.25.96.* bottom line; ----PAT'S.PENDING----

  Thanks again! This one was my grandmother's on the other side of my family. When I get home today, I'll check those dates.
