.454 Casull muzzle velocity, 20" barrel
Anyone know what the .454 Casull Muzzle velocity would be out of a 20" barrel, with a few different bullet weights?

Well I dont have a chronograph, or a 20" bbl for mine, but I do have a couple of reloading manuals I can look in - they have mostly 7 1/2" bbl length velocities, and one with 12" velocities. Powders also make the difference..... 0 -
Thanks Dano anything would help. I was looking at a Rossi lever action rifle ( looks like a Win M92 ) and it comes in .454 Casull, you can also shoot .45 Long Colts in it, was wondering what kind of performance it would give me in the 20" barrel. 0 -

So....Keep in mind that these ranges are from 3 to 5 different powders, varing amounts, bullets, and overall lengths and 2 different manuals - just some ranges for you.....
I imagine that it would still preform well out of your rifle - and definitly more accurate!! Its definitly a kick out of a revolver...You may also check the major manufacturers - for example here's Corbon's Powerhouse Loads - of the factory loads available, their's pack the "biggest punch" IMHO (or at least my wrist thinks so!!![:D])

You may have to re-load to find the optimum performance for your rifle.
Commercial 454 ammo is loaded for peak performance in handguns thus your powder burn will be long completed before the bullet reaches the end of a rifle barrel ... so I wouldn't be suprised to see a slight drop in velocity.
Accuracy wise, even if velocity were down a bit, you should see an improvement providing that the twist rate is sufficient to stabalize the bullet weight your using. Remember though top accuracy is seldom found at top velocity, but were not talking "match" shooting here, so you should be fine.
I have a lever gun in 45 Colt that I soup up my loads a bit with ... beauty of a large volume case with standard (modern) loads that leave plenty of case volume. Have a lot of fun shooting it.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
my buddy has a puma 454 lever action and i chronographed the partition golds out of it at high 2200 to low 23's i can't remember the exact #'s and that has a 20" bbl on it, i'll call him tomorrow and see if he remembers the exact figures 0 -

not a problem... are you going to be shooting factory or handloads?? i haven't had the chance to read much on the Rossi lever gun for the 454, but i have heard and seen 454 casull brass splitting with higher pressure loads in the puma gun.. even factory partition golds were splitting, i think it was the gun itself but i read somewhere else where this could be a problem in lever guns with higher pressure loads, if you intend on handloading i'd stay below max to save your brass and your gun, lever guns dont like high pressures much and the casull is pretty high, i still havent had the chance to get the figures for you on what we loaded and chrony'ed but i'll see my buddy tomorrow for sure and remember to ask him... my personal opinion.... the casull is one of the better performing pistol cartridges in a rifle, just be sure to get a good quality firearm (whatever brand you decide on) so it can withstand the abuse of the casull cartridge...0
