8mm belted ammo

I just bought a container of 8mm belted Yugo ammo.

The belt and ammo have some type of {I am gessing] protective coating that is sticky.

I do not want to run this throught firearm unless cleaned up a bit.

What is the best way to remove this substance?

    When ever I run in to stuff like that, I use Simple Green at full strength. Moisten a paper towel with SG and rub the lube off the ammo.

    Simple Green is non toxic, but it will take the oil off your hands and dry them out. If this bothers you wear dish washing gloves.

    Do this outside, as the fumes from the full strength SG are pretty strong.

    WallMart sells in their auto department stuff called Purple Power, it will also do the job and is cheaper then Simple Green.

    you could use a degreasant that would take the coating right off and if youd want to clean the brass use Brasso a brass shining agent i used it to clean my shells all the time works better and faster than a rock tumbler.

    I would caution against Brasso? as it contains ammonia and weakens brass that needs structrual strength, such as ammo cases.

    Ive never noticed any weakening of the brass i used if it is made to clean brass why would it intentionally harm it or weaken it that i cannot understand.

    Ammonia desolves the Zink in Brass...I've seen Cases that had been tumbled in Household Ammonia for over an hour.....The cases were chunking off pieces like a broken window....Nice and Clean and polished like a Mirror......but in pieces.....Listen to what the Man is telling You.....Keep ammonia away from Brass Cases........

    I still dont see where it harms rifle brass My grandad has been cleaning rifle brass for over 50 years with that product and never had that problem. And i know your gonna say how did you gun not blow up but seriously ive never had a problem and i dont see anywhere on the bottle where it says ammonia on it. and i still dont understand how a product made to clean brass would destroy it.

    although if your actually serious and you show me where it says not to clean brass using this product then i will stop using it.

    Hey Cyclonus, sounds like you are HARD HEADED, If your really interested go to your local market and buy a bottel of ammonia, It's very cheap then put in a couple of your EMPTY shell cases over night and see what it does.

    I never heard of Zinc in brass (if its made of brass why is there Zinc in it) I wouldnt use ammonia which is not a cleaner designed for cleaning brass, And Brasso is a product that is made to polish/restore brass to its original finish and if ammonia weakens brass then why in the hell would the Brasso company put ammonia in thier product if it damages brass (which it is designed to clean in the first place) BTW my grandad thinks your all full of it. (not my opinion id just like some documented evidence rather than just say so)

    i never said it was an element first of all
    second i dont recall jumping on one of your threads and calling you an idiot
    and If brasso destroyed brass while cleaning it
    How in the hell would they ever make any money by selling thier product
    now that is a riddle for you.
