What is the best police service weapon these days?
I work for a police department in California. The time has come where I need to purchase my own weapon...its optional but I figured I could get better than the standard issue .40 (very old). I was wondering what service weapon (side arm) is considered to be the best these days for police work. Any insight will be much appreciated. Thanks.

In my, not so humble, opinion I would buy what most of my friends on the LAPD use: S&W 545...I have shot their guns and I prefer them over the plastic fantastics and even the 1911! Very smooth and accurate!! 0 -
I would go with the Sig P229 in 40s&w. Good balance, reliable, tried and true. My personal choice is the 10mm and I carry a S&W 1076 in the FBI version. [8D]

I carry a Sig P220, 45 auto, and as far as I am concerned, it by far out preforms any other carry auto on the market today. It is absolutely reliable under any and all conditions, and is good for years of service with any major repairs, if you keep it in good condition.
I know of many police personal that carry this weapon, and have heard of no complaints from any of them. The Sig is a bullet proof weapon, that will not let you down in any police situation. You won't be sorry, if you decide on the Sig-P220

The top two are SiG and Glock divided up about equally with Smith and Wesson trailing a distant third, more federal agencies use the SiGs, while more local law enforcement officers use Glocks.

[8D]I retired (again) in Jan. this year, My favorite (not reg) WAS THE S&W 1911 (last) AND RUGER GP 100(357) back-up and I wasn't a uniformed LEO. The S&w 1911 is the best .45 out or the box -going-it's stainless steel and it op's with DECIDED police loads.Mr. Smith & W have an agreement with the cops![;)][:)][:)][:D]

Glock has the majority of the Law Enforement market in the USA. The model 22 or 23 are good all around service weapons and the L.E. price is real good,just under $400.00 witout night sights. The best weapon I ever carried or shot is the Sig P220, I carried it for ten years,then the Dept. purchased all the officers Glocks and we had no choice. I learned to like the Glock and think they are good all around weapon, so you won't go wrong with one and save a good bit over the Sig. But if money is no problem Sig P220 is the way to go[:D] 0 -
Aggghhhhhhh! Finally! Another person with the same affliction I have. I knew if I hung around here long enough I'd find a kindrid soul! Hey, jimbowby, Welcome Aboard! The SW1911 is a mighty fine pistol! I own TWO! Love 'em. Great shooters. Very reliable. Very accurate. Now there is at least one other guy that posts (from the Vatican, no less!) who dislikes them, but since he is on the run (we almost punched his ticket in Sri Lanka) we can disregard his opinion, as he's probably just trying to throw new recruits off. Seriously, how does someone who has "been around the block" tell a new guy that a gun 94 years old is still the best thing going; and even better in it's latest incarnation? Seems unbelieveable, doesn't it? Guys like us went through wars with the 1911, both in the military and on the street, studied Col. Jeff Cooper, did the bullseye thing, etc.; and we know. But how do you get this across to a "newbie"? I dunno. I guess teaching someone that "cocked and locked" is just a bit faster than double action, and 230 grains of lead is better than 180 grains, is hard to do. It comes with training, and the departments don't teach it--most of them never did. A trip to Gunsite or Thunder Ranch will convert some of the hardest-to-sell, but those who have never done any of the above just don't know. Medicarchangel, if you have complete freedom of selection, grab a 1911 in some form or another; and the SW1911 is a great place to start![:D] 0 -
Sig, Glock, HK for a duty weapon.
And also in my not so humble opinion. S&W needs to stick to making wheel guns. I have had the chance to fire 2 of their 1911s, and to say the least, HELL NO would I buy one. [:D]
Stick to Kimbers, Wilsons, or Springfields when it comes to the 1911.0
