Shooting 3 in in a 2-3/4 shotgun

Over the weekend my father in law bought a 20 gauge and shot a few 3 in shells in a 2-3/4 marked barrel. He said nothing happend, but if this is the case why have them marked at all?

Whats the risk?

If it matters it was an old single shot stevens.

    It only takes once for an over pressure situation to blow up a gun and cause possible injury.

    did he buy it used or new? if it was used, it may have been modified to shoot 3" buy a gunsmith. if new...youre playing with fire. just tell him not to get any blood on the gun or the value of the gun will go down when you sell it as scrap metal...after his funeral.[xx(] have a gunsmith check the chamber and ejection port for signs of a 3" mod.

    the problem with 3" shells is the crimp unfolds into the forcing cone area of the 2&3/4" chamber reducing the bore diameter inside therefore the shot cup,shot,& wad have to be squeezed down and this in turn raises chamber pressure drastically. Not a good idea to keep doing this.

    Definatly something that should never be done again. People post photos of exploded firearms from time to time. Needless to say it looks like a very painful experince to say the least.

    Is there a chance that he could of weakend or damaged the chamber?

    See your insurance man immediately and take out some life insurance on your father in law... Suggestion.. Stay away from him when he shoots it again.

    Don't forget to make it a big policy, then buy him a case of 3' shells and tell him everyone you asked says it's OK.

    The 2 3/4 inch chamber allows for the crimp on a 2 3/4" shell to open. Put a 3" in there and unfired it is as long as a 2 3/4" is fired. That's why it fits.

    When a 3" opens in the chamber there is a bottle neck at the mouth of the shell as the material making the crimp is not allowed for at the end of the chamber. I'd bet the barrel has a ring after a "few" magnums. This isn't a rifle barrel either, the average .22 has about 3/16" wall thickness at the muzzle. Your shotgun probably doesn't have an eighth at the chamber, the heaviest part.

    I wouldn't shoot anything in the gun until it is checked out by a gunsmith.

    Thank god my wife and i werent there when he did it. I guess they put all those warnin's and stuff on there for a good reason huh?
