Winchester Model 70 XTR
While at the local pawn shop picking up a Japanese military rifle I saw a nice M-70 Winchester XTR in .270 caliber. After looking it over, I couldn't put it down. It was in almost perfect condition. It even had detachable sling swivels but no sling. I thought that somewhat strange. Anyway, I now have a great looking rifle I don't really need but am happy to own. The price was $295 and seemed decent to me even if not a "deal". My question is when were the XTR models made and are they as good as those now being sold? Would the 130 grain load be a good choice for deer or would a heavier bullet be better?

I have a Winchester model 70 xtr. Is this the same as a super grade or is this completely different. I cannot seem to find anything about the xtr. It is also is very good condition, a few scrapes on the stock but overall very good condition. What would this gun be worth?

Don't know about when they were made but, either 130 gr or 150 gr is fine for deer. I like the the 130s better. No real reason, my rifle and I just seem to shoot better with them.
It does sound like an excellent deal. Especially if it fits you well. Alot of good marksmanship is being comfortable with your weapon.

Hello TWalker: The Md 70 XTR was made from 1981-1989, starting in 1990 they dropped the XTR marking. The early ones were made when Winchester was still owned by the Olin Corp., and actually have Winchester on the recoil pad. About 1983 or so the recoil pad had USRA on it.
Some people prefer the earlier ones. I to like you, had an oppertunity to pick one up about 12 years ago in .30-06, the price was right at $225. Most XTRs had nice walnut. It's the only Post 64 Winchester I own, but it has worked for me. The .270 Cal, is a little more popular, and your price of $295. is fair, I don't believe you over paid, if it's as nice as you say. You got a real good deal. I have seen a lot of these rifles sell for $400 and up.

The 130 gr is a good go to weight in the 270 as a rule, but a lot of the ones I have had a chance to load for preferred the 150 Hornady Round nose inside of 300 yards.. But remember they are all different in there likes....but it wouldn't hurt to at least try them in yours.
Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.0
