What .22 to buy?
I cannot afford a S&W Model 41. What is the next best .22 target pistol to buy? Make, Model, Barrel length? Bull barrel? Blue steel or stainless?
Any and all info and advice would be most appreciated.

I agree with Ramtinxxl. The barrel length will not exceed 10 inches for what ever range you want with a hand gun in .22 calibur. I would recomend 5 to 6 inch barrel. Then practice practice and practice. My 2 cents [8D]

A lot of that is up to you. What's your budget? (And by the way, the European match pistols favored by many competitors cost a lot more than the Smith)
Go see my post on the General discussion board, but I'd say in terms of what you get for what you spend, its pretty hard to beat a used High Standard with a bull barrel.
These come in a variety of configurations, but if you look around, $500 should get you a gun that's competitive with a Smith 41 in terms of accuracy, quality of sights, and quality of trigger. (Those would be the biggest three things you are looking for in a target gun).0 -
Use caution with the high standards. If they got shot much with high speed ammo the frame rails may be cracked. They are designed for standard speed target ammo only. High Standard pistols, like a trophy or citation are good pistols for club type bullseye shooting on a budget. 0 -

I agree you cannot go wrong with he Ruger, BUT, this is what happened when I bought mine. It is a Govt. model stainless with a 6 7/8" bull barrel and it is very finicky about what ammo it will cycle. I guess it was due to the tight tolerance. I finally found a round it liked and have used it since. It is extremely accurate but will not cycle plain lead bullets. I don't like them much anyway so I'm good to go. The Browning Buckmark can be had for $199 at Dicks and from what I have heard, it is an excellent piece. I paid $289 for the Ruger 8 years ago.

I like my Browning buckmark. The Target model however, can start at $300 something and go up depending on all of the stuff you put on it. My basic camper is the $219.00 version and it isn't finicky about what it eats. So, it will depend on which fits your hand better, what you want to spend, and how far you want to go with competition. I wouldn't go out and plunk my big money down until I got pretty good with a good piece. If you were to get an older Hi-Standard for reasonable money I'd think you would have a good piece too. Ruger Mark II also.
