Winchester Pre-64 220 Swift varmint

Thanks much for all the information on the barrel on my 220 Swift. Another question regarding the gun. Its serial number is #516203. Given that number can anyone give me any information about the gun or a source I can research and read? I got it from an estate and they told me in the information that there were only 904 of this particular gun made. I have no data to support that claim other than their written comment to that end. I would like to read any information I can on the gun as I know it has a history and I am interested in it. thanks, DRJR1badspringer

    My sources show your rifle built in 1961. You are correct in the number of rifles made. The "Rule" book by Roger Rule or The Model 70 Winchester by Dean Whitaker are the only two I am familiar with to give you some info on your rifle. Bert may be along shortly and he may have another idea. Enjoy they are a great shooting rifle.

    Snickers hit the nail on the head. Roger Rule says the '61 220 Swift was probably made between April and May of '61. retailed for $154.50 about $10 more than in '60. No rear sight, 26" barrel, Monte Carlo Stock. Two styles of barrel #5 medium heavy and #8 Heavy. 904 issued

    Thanks Paul for the info on my Swift. However, it does not have a Monte Carlo stock and the stock, buttplate, sling and swivels are all original. Also wondering how one determines which of the heavy barrels I have. It seems to be the nickel as it will not cold blue in the spots I tried. It is 26" and it measures 3/4" at the muzzle. Would this be the heavy barrel #8 or a lighter one?

    It should be a #8 barrel in stainless steel. It sounds like your rifle might be a target model or a varmit or target with a marks man stock. If you could send me a picture I'll try to figure it out.

    I'll offer the same help as "snickers" as I have Whitaker and Rule in the shop and actively collect pre-64's of 1952 issue. Need a 220 Swift if anybody knows of one out there..as my present is of '63/64 vintage. Barrels were stainless marked Winchester proof steel...they were coated with iron oxide to blue...cold blue is quite a trick to make work on em. Temperature is the key...
