reducing glare on shotgun stock
I have an SKB o/u that has a high gloss finish that is similar to Browning finishes that I have heard referred to as 'plastic'. I would like to make this a less reflective 'matte' kind of finish without completely refinishing the stock and forearm. Is there a way to do this? Would sanding with 400 sandpaper work?

dannej, what has worked for me has been to rub the stock with pumice. This flattened it out a little too much so I then worked it over with a lambs wool bonnet on a polisher which came out just right.
Something like that and /or Rembrandt's suggestion should work.

I sure wouldn't want to deglaze a stock with O or OO steel wool as that stuff's
aggressive enough to peel rust off of a wagon.......
Brownells.com has a triple F polishing compound that will do exactly what you want with out any problems.

At home depot they sell a solvent used to remove the shiny finish off of wood to prep it for a primercoat to promote adhesion. I just used it to refinish some trim in my house. It was not a strong solvent, but did just that. It removed the shine.
Or...you can take something as fine as 1500 grit sandpaper used in the automotive industry to colorsand clear coat before it is buffed. That would be enough grit to just remove the shine. Then if you didn't like it you could still buff it back to brand new. I wouldn't use anything too course that will go through your shine coat. If you protrude through that outer coat you are opening the wood up to the weather and elements. Start with something VERY fine. It will work.0
