Is this 870 receiver a Magnum?

My 12ga 870 Express receiver is stamped with the following marking, 'Remington 870 Express'. It is not stamped 'Magnum' but the serial number ends in the letter M. Someone once told me that if the serial number ends in an M, that it was a Magnum receiver. Is this true? Does this alone indicate that it will safely handle 3 inch magnum shells? Thanks

  There should be a stamp on the barrel somewhere that says that its rated for. Look for the following 2 3/4, and 3".

  "M" in the serial number is correct. # inch shells , OK.

  What dictates whether an 870 will handle three inch shells is the barrel more than anything, but if the ejector shell stop is for the shorter 2 3/4 inch shells it will not eject the 3" shells. The receivers are actually the same for the 870 wingmaster/express and the 870 magnum. The only difference, like I said is the shell stop on the ejector.
